    Fixing A MP3 Player

    Hey all

Well, like most, I own an mp3 player, more specifically, a Venturer 512mb generic pile of junk. While one day listening to it, something weird happened, the head phone jack on it, cut out, however, i could still hear parts of the song, though heavily distorted, fumbling with it a bit, and it seemed that the contacts on either the headphone jacks were shot, or a solder had failed inside.

So i took it down to my local electronic repair shop (also known as my electronics teacher), and cracked it open. To my surprise, all of the solder holding the jack in, had failed. Problem solved?. After a quick resolder, it still does the same.

I was wondering, since there is no improvement after the repair, how could i go about diagnosing the problem further and repairing it?

I would just buy a new one for about £20, save the hassle.

Agreed, if you are sure all the points are soldered correctly then it's pretty much got to be component failure. Not worth the hassle.

I may be stating the obvious, but have you tested it with an alternative pair of headphones? Also, have you checked the inside of the jack to see if it has any dirt or similar inside?

Re-check your contacts with a multimeter. Consider changing the plug, if your guy's an electronics teacher he's probably got a few around.

Yeah, it's got to be the jack. Try replacing it (just buy a cheap walkman somewhere and swap them out.) Easier said than done but you sound like you're handy with a soldering iron.

Paulo, to answer your question, unfortuneatly, not yet. I have'nt had the time to get out to the shops recently and get a new jack, hopefully this weekend i might be able too. For the time being however, my shuffle will have to do
