Multi mega broken laser ?

a friend of mine bought recently one of those combined megacd / megadrive units (uk multi mega model same like the us one called cdx) unfortunatly it seems to have a broken spindle motor or defect laser ?

the megadrive slot games work without a problem but if you put in a audiocd or a megacd it just starts spinning (displaying the checking disc message) and stops and spins again and then stops completly

i could get it to play a audiocd when pushing the cd while it the unit was open when it stoppend spinning but that did work only one time

anyone had this problem ever and / or knows a solution ?

If it spins, the motor should be good. I would clean the laser and then try again .

If it plays occasionally, I would check the tracking distance, or for any leaking caps inside the unit.

lens was cleaned but could be blinded after the years maybe

are any special tools needed to open a multimega or are there just the normal screws ?

It's damn small stuff in there. Be sure to be gentle on the shielding foil, it rips easy.

There's a big stick mess of shielding tape, a few screws.

Then you can troubleshoot at the component level the caps and resistors on the laser assembly.

I used to have a Sega CDX that had a similar problem..it started spinning the disc then stopped and showed a "no disc" message in the TV screen.

I found that I still could use it if I started to spin the game disc with my hand and then closed the lid and quickly turned on the cdx....it still works! :D

The mechanisim can be bought, or taken from old cd players, but putting it in is not for the layman. Look for the turboduo cd laser replacement info for a general guide.

Unfortunately, the Multimega/CDX lens is one part we haven't been able to identify conclusively yet, mostly because none of us is willing to pull apart a perfectly good CDX. I'm almost certain that it's a JVC part, as that's the company that provided most of the lenses for that era of Sega hardware. There's an outside chance that there's also an equivalent Sony part.

I took mine apart, but took no pics. Re-assembly is a pain because of all the stick shielding inside.

I got a box of em when sega-parts blew out the loose ones for $15 each to employees. I got them off some chap I knew.

I'm having a similar problem with a Multimega I recently purchased. It's very selective and will only load a few games.

Help! I just purchased a Sega CDX that the seller swore he tested a couple days before I picked it up. However, when I brought it home I found that the Genesis port worked, but the CD drive doesn't spin at all.

The screen just says "checking disc" and then "no disc" without anything actually happening within the console (the disc doesn't spin and there's no audible suggestion that the laser is moving). I'm really at a lost because I've been wanting one of these units for a long time.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? Any new ideas?

is there still need for a lense identification cause the cdx here ist still laying around in parts
