My understanding was that the trophy system just sent a round to intercept the missle. I don't think it's actually an electronic "force field"

Yeah, it is definitely a point defense system. In some of the slow motion explosions, you can see what I would call "directed chaff" heading towards the missle/rpg.

I am really surprised that we don't have a deployable form of force field yet. Particularly, a static electricity based solution doesn't seem too hard. They have unintentional "invisible barriers" in places where plastic sheets are being wrapped at high velocities.

Marisil, what do you mean "plastic barriers warped at high velocities?" Like that creates a static force field? So the idea then would be the field of static energy would cause the gernade/rocket/missile/etc. to explode or be deflected away from the target? Just wondering, never heard of this myself.

It's a phenomenon that occurs in places that do a lot of high speed roll-to-roll sheet transfers. Think of something like a typical newspaper printing press. Before they cut the pages, the paper is printed and fed through the machine on rolls. While I could see paper rolls generating enough static electricity, plastic sheets can generate much, much more.

Here is the "classic" 3M example that is brought up every once in a while:

Effectively, the static prevents objects from moving past it. Projectiles would lose velocity and drop to the ground.

Yeah, fox news already has it's own "reality distortion field"...

This is propaganda BS, if such thing could exist it would be all over in places like defensetech and other weapons blogs.

Funny, they say is top secret and classified, yet they announce it in one of america's most viewed news channel:rolleyes:

The story is clearly propoganda (we all know Fox's politics, so no need to go further.) But the actual system they're talking about is pretty intruging. Also remeber if it were truely "classified" it wouldn't be on the news, we don't hear about stuff like this until they have something better.

Anyway, I totally didn't know that about static fields. How could one generate a field large enough to stop a missile with this method? I'm sure it's possible, I suppose the field would have to be some distance away from the target for it to be effective.

The amount of static necesary to destroy the missile would be so big it may produce big bolts of electricity around the target it had to protect in the first place.

Tesla rules, he may invented some serious stuff since there's a lot of his patents that are still top secret for the govnt, even when most are 70 years old and more.

Wouldnt (propoganda) have to be somthing goverment sponsored

Yeah but it sure is nice to have a news channel catering to somthing other than fat welfare collecting women who do nothing but bitch about how high gas is and how bush is (a moron).

Yes i know a pro gun pro life pro religion guy like myself (not religous by the way) is way out numbered on the internet let alone a gaming site, but i try.

Well, the government "sponsored" the newscast by giving the reporters access to information regarding the defensive device. Aside from that, let's not turn this into a politcal debate.

Well if they got this info you can bet they have some contact in govnt.

Plus I heard cheney is such a big fan of Fox that he watch only their news.

Anyways, as marsil said, lets not make this political.

This isn't something that was developed in the United States... this is an israli project. And they have been using these for quite some time. Ever see one of those giant armored bulldozers of theirs? They have the trophy system equiped. Thats why no one has ever disabled one of those bulldozers...

The little secret of those bulldozer are the insane amount of armor they have.

The cabin for example, is made of 2 walls of solid-steel bricks.

Did you hear that kerry supported the war before he was against it?

But yeah just like marsil said lets not make this political:p

    I am joking seriously!!
