Today, Sony told Gamasutra that the PS3 will get the 60GB HD standard, following uncertainty over remarks made at last week’s Tokyo press conference. Sony Entertainment’s Europe PR Manager Jonathan Fargher acknowledged that 60 GB will be the default size, and there will be larger sizes as peripherals. This follows Sony honcho Ken Kutaragi’s comments that all games will require a HD.

The PS3's hard drive will have 5 times more space than the 360. Don't you love marketing?
3 times as much. Figure, while the Xbox 360 is loaded with Xbox profiles , and all that jazz, PS3 will have Linux on it, plus probably all those apps that were promised for the PS2 HDD lol
Well at least it has a nice amount of space for all those pirate games.

well even the xbox had partitions to help with that, but 60 gigs is a nice start with all the stuff they'll probably want us downloading. I just think if they let you download older ps2 games or whatever, it'll need to get bigger eventually.
Sony are touting the PS3 as a media centre. 60GB won't go far when used for that.
Which is why, one assumes, they will offer larger drives as an upgrade option. I suppose having 60GB standard is more than enough for the average Joe and reduces the cost of the machine.

yes, but if sony sells it for like $499, $399, or whatever...they eat the cash for now, establish a cheap bluray player and then reap in the license fees later...
there's no need to worry for the ps3 price, maybe for the price of games though.

I've never actually realized why newer consoles need internal HDs of such a size. Piracy and emulation always came to mind...
I'd be willing to bet when they say it "has Linux installed" they are just talking about what the OS and file structure will be running on. You won't get a full fleged computer like OS.
Id also be willing to bet this gets cut out before release, or the ps3 will hit at $600 or more. You can only take so much of a loss on hardware. As it is people are wondering how they will put in all the things they've claimed and keep it economical.
Ken has said it won't be cheap. Black market organs here I come!

I'd imagine the Linux thing is a tax dodge. The PS2 linux kit was meant to allow SCEE to establish the system as a home computer rather than a pure games console to reduce some import tax or somesuch.

Might be worth keeping an eye open. Do IGN usually cover the GDC? I know Edge usually reports on it, but it's almost a month until the next issue.

I somehow see music and video downloads at some point.
Ooh, I've been talking to someone going to GDC, I'll ask him if he plays on one of them :P
I missed the deadline to get into GDC this year :(
Thankfully though, I do know quite a few people going. So at least I can ask them about some of the details when they get back.
