From my understanding of Sonic X-Treme, weren't the PC builds almost exclusively the work of Chris Senn (graphics, music) and Ofer Alon (programming)? While not the long-lost Saturn killer app most Sonic fans are desperate to have, these may provide ultimately more in the way of substance. However, whether they are actually faithful to what STI had in mind for the more familiar console version won't really be known until something is actually shown, and considering the roll that seems to be happening just now I wouldn't be surprised if this happens sooner as opposed to later. On the other hand, STI seems to have changed its plans for X-Treme as a 32X/Neptune/Saturn/PC project so many times that I have concerns a finished game would have even resembled the screenshots and video footage we've all seen a million times before. Then again, if Chris Senn's animated mock-ups are any indication, STI kept with an overall style very similar to BUG! for quite a long time into X-Treme's development, switching to the boss engine technology when its fate was already sealed.

If anything, a leak of the game in its PC incarnation would also give more fans an opportunity to analyse this undoubted "holy grail" and perhaps even come up with their own interpretations of how it may have looked in a complete form - something only a handful of dedicated homebrew programmers could ever do with playable Saturn code. Still, it would be nice to have both for comparison... as well as allowing us the opportunity to say that we finally have what is quite possibly one of the best known unreleased games of all time!

I'm actually in the process of planning an article on this for Retro Gamer (many thanks to HXC for offering assistance).

Does anyone have any quick links to the images posted during the auction? I recall seeing photos taken of the game in action, as well as a Sega CD proprietry disc (this was done to prove that the seller was associated with Sega, right?).

Otherwise the promised video of said demo sounds mighty interesting.

Images are available there. Please note it says ex-sega employie, so it may, or may not have been someone who worked on Sonic Xtreme.
