During the last weeks I heard a lot about Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 8, and I finally decided to give them both a try. Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my notebook and a couple of hours ago I installed the Windows 8 Developer Preview in my desktop. They're both really interesting since they show a huge change from the classic desktop concept.

Well, here's a screenshot of my current desktop:

I didn't know Ubuntu 11.10 was out yet, even in beta form. I'm using 11.04.

EDIT: Ah, I see. You can test it out now. I think I'll wait until it's available in a more stable form. 11.04 is working pretty well for me at the moment.

I like my backgrounds to be black so I loaded up Paint.Net and just made it black using the paint bucket,if you want the pic let me know.

The amount of stutter I ended up getting using my SSD as a cache under Intel Rapid Storage Technology got too ridiculous for me and setting RAID mode back to ACHI just BSOD so I had to to reinstall Windows 7 again.

Anyhow I decided to use some gadgets to see how badly my system was getting hammered in Crysis 2 (FYI the gameplay itself is pretty average / unremarkable but the graphics are AMAZING). Alt tabbing out using Lucid Logix Virtu iGPU mode crashed the game and alt tabbing out in dGPU mode it just forced the current resolution but windowed. I had also expected Virtu would reduce the load on the dGPU in iGPU mode especially whilst browsing etc which in a way it did - but oddly when gaming again there was a 20 FPS or so hit. I knew there was an overhead but blimey I didn't expect anywhere enar that much of a drop... Not good when I was just about making 60FPS in DirectX 11 Ultra mode.

Also I couldn't get apps to maximise without going over or under the Windows 7 sidebar so I applied the Win7-Sidebar-Fix hack, then created a custom resolution for use in windowed mode to display the game as best as I could with what space I had left. To get a little bit of extra space I changed the taskbar to small icons. I could have used autohide I guess but I'd rather see the taskbar at all times. Also I had to set the gadgets to 95% of their native resolution to fit them all on one page.

FYI I'm using an old or low grade LCD TV as my monitor and as it only displays in 720p or 1080i modes, 1280 x 800 WXGA is about as good as I can do at 60 Hz / DirectX 11 without the image going too squashy or disabling DirectX 11 altogether. Also I only have the recycle bin and the default windows 7 aero wallpaper on desktop :P

This is the current desktop for the laptop I'm using at the moment. I made the wallpaper http://fav.me/d4hib4w late last month when I was struck by a bad case of ALTTP nostalgia.

Out of interest are there any providers I am missing? I mean apart from Gamespy or Comrade :P I don't bother using xfire any more either.

The only other thing I'd change would be to add the Widnows build number on the background. I knew how to do that in Windows XP sort of (though cheated and used the powertoys to be lazy) but I have not got around to enabling it in Windows 7 yet.
