is there any difference between the H30002 and the H30102? and anyone know why or if there is a fix for the problem with playing import psx games on a PAL TEST unit? TIA

sorry should have explained when i run US/JAP games on my pal TEST unit the games seem to get pushed up the screen and i have a large boarder at the bottom.
TEST PS2 units will play PS2 games in their native format (ie put in NTSC disc, get NTSC signal, PAL disc, PAL signal). However, TEST PS2 units behave differently for PSX games. Instead of displaying the proper signal, it will attempt to convert NTSC->PAL or PAL->NTSC resulting in a rather screwed up image. This is causing the visual effect you're seeing. About the only solution is to use GS codes (or patch the game disc) so that it's set for PAL and outputs PAL.

You will find that this happens on a modded retail PS2 also. If you have a NTSC PS2 it physically cannot play a PAL PSone game unless you copy it, patch it and then reburn it.
DTL-H30102 is much better than the older version common DTL-H30002. For a start the DTL-H30102 series can use the HDD and BB Nav utility discs from any region whereas the older version DTL-H30002 can't play them.
Actually...... that is the only difference in "play" but there are other debugging options that the newer models do although I'm not too sure which at the moment.
DTL-H5000x series are the same as SCPH-5000x series - i.e built in IR port, no iLink port, quiet fan etc.
The DTL-H3010x series are most favourable because they can connect to the TOOL via iLink and receive code direct from the TOOL as if it were reading it from a disc.
Hello, i have a little problem with my dtl-h30102:
i can boot the bbnav 0.32 original disc but it only shows an error screen about the Playstation BB Unit, i guess it's the external hhd that came with the first japanese model, so i'm stuck here.
I have backups of the Final Fantasy XI Hdd Utility disc, the US network setup v3 and the bbnav .30, they are all recognized by the TEST as Playstation1 discs and only show a black screen when i launch them...:(
i have the broadband adapter hooked up but not with an official hdd, could it be the cause of the bbnav not working?
First, are your "backups" patched as masters? Second, it doesn't sound like they're backed up right. Usually ps2 disks appear as ps1 disks when you use nero to copy them. Use alchohol 120% instead. Third, i don't believe the BBNav disks will work on a TEST unit, but the other utility disks should.Originally Posted by unclejun

From what I have heard BB. Nav discs should work with a DTL-H30102 because they are just like any other regular PS2 utility discs. The black screen after booting the disc is exactly what happens to my debug PS2 except mine is a DTL-H30002 S. My model of debug PS2 seem to really dislike utility discs, so I have pretty much given up on trying to get them to work. But the black screen suggests that the discs are recognised as being master, but the PS2 fails to boot them. If the patching didn't work it would say "Please insert a PlayStation 2 format disc..."
The reason for the BB. Nav disc not working is most defiantly because you don't have an official HDD, you must have an official one for any HDD apps to work. If you don't mind my asking, do you know what happened to the original HDD?

the backup operation was done badly, i have re-done the backup and patched with the masterdisc patcher, now they'll work :)
You're right about the hdd, it's not the official one, but i have the hdd from the linux kit, i will give it a try soon.
I guess the seller keep the original hdd, if he ever had it...i may ask him.

The Linux kit HDD should work fine, because BB. Nav as far as I know can run on any of the types of official PS2 HDD. There differences in the HDDs between the Linux and the FFXI but basically only in model number and specs. I believe that Sony puts something thing on the HDD which is not erasable so the PS2 can determine if it is an official HDD.
Ok i tried with the linux kit hdd, bbnav 0.32 installs and works well, though i wasn't connected to internet, it's weird seeing the ps2 booting directly into something different than usual....
i also tested a backup of the ffXI hdd utility disc, it installs too, accessing the hdd in the ps2 browser is cool, but what is the use of it, except having a very large memory card?
One thing i notice is i can't install the DVD Drivers, at about 8.5% with the bbnav0.32 original disc or at 20% with the ffXI hdd utility backuped disc, the hdd goes into sleep mode, the cd stops spinning and the install fails :(
if we could dump the firmware of an official hdd and reflash an unofficial one...

It is not possible to play DVDs on a debugging station. This is because the bios on the PS2 is totally missing the DVD video part of it. The DVD drivers are only updates really and they still require part of what is on the bios, so therfore it is not possible to play DVDs.
It may be possible to do that but you first would have to make sure that the retail hard drive is the exact equivalent to the official PS2 mode HDDl. Putting the firmware from one model of hard drive on to another different model will probably kill the hard drive. The other thing you would have to make sure of is that you are acctually able to extract and reflash the firmware.
it might be interesting to try....
if we could dump the firmware of an official hdd and reflash an unofficial one...Just get a modchip with Auto ATAD Patching support (DMS3, DMS4, Matrix Infinity) and install it in a normal PS2.
I have a Matrix Infinity modded PS2, with Browser 2.0 update so i can do backups of saves on the hdd, install cache of supported games (2K5 sports series, Socom 2, RE Outbreak 1 and 2, ... )
Plus the modchip allows DEV1 (booting from MC) and DEV2 mode (booting homebrew appz from the HDD). I have lots of appz installed on the HDD, including HD Loader 0.7c (making games like Mercenaries and Burnout 3 load and play much better. All other big resource eaters like GTA series really benefits of being installed on the HDD. Not only it loads faster and plays better but also saves your drive lens).
You can even connect the PS2 to the PC through a crossover cable and load and / or copy stuff from the PC to the PS2 HDD.
I even planned to install the PS2 Linux, but it would eat too much space of the HDD (I installed a Samsung SP0802N 80GB on the PS2)
The PS2 homebrew scene is finally catching up the Xbox guys. (But the Xbox homebrew scene had official stolen XDK from the start, where the PS2 is made mostly by open source libs and sdks...)
I'll make a huge topic about my PS2 and the stuff i have on the HDD when i have free time.

That would be awesome... I've basicly given up on PS2 dev as i've yet to be able to get anything i've written to work on a TEST unit. It'll work on a TOOL, it'll work on a modded unit, but everything i've ever tried fails on a test...
i know that a modchip brings cool stuff like dev1, dev2 and auto-ATAD patching but i can live with the ps1Driver exploit on my v7 and the dtl-h30102 by its side...

I belive that the DTL-H30102 does have 64mb of ram, but I can't help you with changing parameters, I've got no idea how.
