Nice stuff but this seems to be how to erase the battery in order to play a GDROM. Its just a preparation to the actual process :(

It used to all be there with pictures. The rest of the steps im guessing are the steps you have done so far. Try doing that first though....

Hmm, the connector he is talking about is the smaller IDE type one but once you pull that out the DC wont even turn on at all.

EDIT: NM, works now..attempting swap trick.

EDIT 2: Nope, Looks like we need the whole guide. The HTML has a link there but its dead as well as on archive

Hmmm it could be worth trying to contact ASSEMbler, he was offering Dev Kit's not that long ago.

    Hope that helps.

It means press stop in the CD player. ;)

No reason to tear up the motor on your drive by trying to swap spinning discs. So long as the lid sensor is tied down the unit won't know you swapped discs. As far as it knows the cover is still closed.

Stead, I tired that and its still going back to the main menu after I try and load it.

GD-Rs can be region coded, just like retail discs. Aside from the earliest ones, most are. You must have hardware that matches the region of your GD-R or it isn't going to boot, with the System Disc 2.0 -or- the swap trick.

Nice to see my tutorial is still being used, however as you have seen the URL isnt working anymore. (my account has been deleted there becouse I switched from my subscription). However I will remake the tutorial and host it on my new domain.

    Goodluck with the booting process~!

I remember using wombat's method with success awhile ago. Trying it now off of memory with an MVC 2 GD-R worked.

First step is tape the drive door switch down. Then with the DC open and powered on remove the ribbon going to the controller ports. This is to erase the internal battery although after trying it all afternoon it does not always work. Your DC should turn off by itself at this point. Press the power switch and turn it off. Put the ribbon back in.

Insert your GD-ROM disc now, and power the system on. If your battery was in fact erased, then you will see the set time/date menu. Do nothing at this point while the disc is spinning. After a couple of minutes it will stop. Put in your GD-R that you want to play, press start or select on the screen, and your GD-R will boot.

The main problem I had was erasing the internal battery. Pulling the ribbon didn't always work. You should eventually get it to work though. Just be careful with the ribbon.
I agree to all auction guidelines.

EDIT: Darn my DC is dead...It wont read any discs now. Im gonna have a go at my other DC.

EDIT 2: Alright so it looks like this isnt going to work, the GDR's are either PAL or JPN and I dont have either system. So it looks like the Dev Kit is the way to go but I have some questions if you guys can help.

    1. Will I be able to boot all games (JPN, USA, PAL) in both retail and GDR form?

    2. Can a Katana take screenshots (and or movies) of games?

    3. Can a Katana take screenshots (or movies) at a higher resolution than the game runs?

Insane-o resolution? I think it takes the same 640x480 quality screenshots, but still looks better than on a TV screen. I don't have one unfortunately, but I'd love to get one from you ASSEMbler, only that I won't have the money till close to Christmas time.

That disc is something I wouldnt mind getting my hands on. Granted it wouldnt suprise me if it was the Utopia Disc, where it would allow you to open the Dreamcast door, and imput CDR-GB disc.
I still know few members of Utopia going to ask them if this was the case.
for those who dont know what Utopia is sorry if I cant say this please edit

It was a disc that allowed you to play back-up softwear on your dreamcast, also allowed you to run Pal games with out a mod.

Late on there was a ''injection'' file that allowed the disc to boot-up with out the use of the ''boot disc''.

Maybe you can ask them about the development of the Utopia disc? I always wondered how the Utopia group found out the DC could boot cdr and how they developed the boot disc. Of course we know they used the katana dev kit, but I'm talking about some "insider" info, if you know what I mean ;)

ermm I don't know what I can and can not say here. They were a group of 4-5 members two of them worked for sega atm (no suprise). At the time the disc came out pretty much they were annoyed with sega for what ever reason, never really went into with them.

Later on Utopia left few members moved on to LFC where and last three to Echelon hence where self boot injection came from.

Umm i smell bullshit in that story. erm a 2 second search on google will reveal team utopia was infact some garman hackers who got arrested for copyright violations after they included a picture of them selfs on the utopia disc.

edit: by the way Echelon came along after the invention of "self boot injection". It was actually Kalisto who came up with that and then quickly left the scene.
