    I must say, this is extremely impressive. Sure, they are just swaping textures, and it's still extremely early on and a little buggy with some computers, but some of the retextured areas look like a first generation Gamecube game (Which is pretty damn good for a 7 year old N64 game). A few examples are taken below (Mostly taken from the topic above, which gets full credit for the below pictures). There is also many more pictures in the link above:

    yeah sadly :-( *grrrr* or should i say like two of the remakes had gone sease and desease (CT ressurection) and now the unreal engine CT

    What exactly did they do? Hack the ROM and squeeze in other textures? That doesnt sound too feasible with the RCP's limit and stuff... or they're 1337.

    some of them on Acmlm's rom hacking Board are quite 1337 i must say although some of them are the noobiest shitheads.

    Those screenshots do look nice. It's a pity that their only way of getting this into the hands of fans, unless they know something I don't, will be as an illegal ROM image with no way of checking for ownership of the original cart or not. You know Nintendo's not going to stand for this.

    I love it when people like to think that intellectual property owners owe them favors like recurring sequels or allowing fan projects based on their licenses. :smt043
    At least CT:R wasn't a hack on the original game data.

    It would be nice to see this completeted and released in some legal manner, but I guess it all remains to be seen.

    i hear about this a long time ago "about rom hacking" they just use normal rom and add a zip, or folder "i dont quite remember" with all the new textures and i think project 64 is the emu you have to use with some special plug in. It looks awesome :)

    They are using '1964' not 'Project 64', and the plugin is called 'Rice Video'.

    They do not compile a rom that includes the updated textures, as the n64 would not be able to handle that. Instead while the emu is running the plugin swaps all textures once they are loaded into memory with the updated ones, so that the emu treats them like the originals.

    Also, 'Goldeneye' and 'Mario Kart 64' updates using the same method have been in the works for some time.

    They don't owe me shit - but when the stuff they're releasing isn't worth my 50 dollars anymore... and when they abusively go after anyone that could resemble "competition" - like free fan projects, well, that just pisses me off.
    You know who made their "intellectual property" succesful? WE did. And we will have them out of business one day if they keep behaving abusively.

    I guess it's safe to always defend the big guys and side with the elite, huh?
    I tell you what. If the companies had behaved like this in the old days of the C64 and Spectrum, we wouldn't have videogames today.
    Stopping fan projects gives a corporation a bad reputation, one of greed. It's probably true, also.
    And one day, when all we have are generic EA style games, you'll realy miss those fan projects, whatever legality they have.

    Also, some people don't like being laughed at.

    //I don't mean for the post to sound agressive. And now that I re-read it it does. It just really surprises me that a videogame fan would side with the corporations in stopping videogame progress.

    If fans decide they want to improve uppon a game they have fond memorys of, with no intention to make profit, and the owner of the intelectual property wont be losing money off it then or at any point from then on (that is, they have no intention of a re-release or remake), then the fans should be allowed to do as they please in such a matter.

    If the so-called fans really want to do something creative then why not get off their asses and make something NEW? ;)

    Besides, with GameTap and Revolution on the horizon any claims of "oh it's not available" or "they're not selling it anymore" are going to be moot.

    As for CT:R, IIRC that project was left alone until the guys working on it tried to sell it to Square and Square rightly said fuck you and squashed it.

    The fact is, Zelda: OoT can be bought for $5 these days, so even if someone out and out steals the ROM it's really not costing anyone (Gamestop, EB, your local flea market vendor or certainly not Nintendo) any amount of money that they would really miss.

    And as for the whole Revolution thing, if Nintendo charges more than $5 for the game through the Revolution service then it's them that's ripping their consumers off, not the hackers ripping Nintendo off. Corporations should have they fewest rights and the most responsibility.

    well not all companies are this way, rockstar was flattered with the nes grand theft auto port, howerver they get unease if someone is trying to make money off of it, but still i know square enix shut them down on purpose as they know it could be profitable to sell a chrono trigger 3d remake, such as they did with dragon quest remakes, but even then i must say this quite an amazing project, and gives emus a sorta of upper edge on the orignal hardware.
