Well, the asia model I got just now (MEGA DRIVE PAL-B, Model no.: 1601-07, Serial no.: A30092361) has an RF modulator on it. Also, the motherboard is ever so slightly different, it's a 171-5963-21 while my normal Pal unit is 171-5963-30. It MOSTLY matches in board layout, but has a few extra discrete components soldered on the bottom, and there are some subtle differences in the caps - some are just not populated, some have no slots either. Also, no board labels on the bottom at all other than the (c) sega product number.
edit: and of course the cart slot can accept JP carts.
The case top has the purple front piece, the big golden 16bit letters, and it also has a cartridge locker (a simple plastic lever hooked up to the power switch), compared to my european pal unit.
I think this will be my main MD console, it looks prettier and it will go better with the few bootleg carts I have.

WWhat is the rev of the board's please? Should say VA-x somewhere. On the VA-6 it is located next to one of the chips.
171-5963-xx is all VA5 or VA6 or even VA6.8.

Hi all and sorry to randomly but in.
I've just got my hands on an Asian Mk1 Mega CD and i wondered if anyone would be able to/interested in burning me a multi-bios Eeprom for some beer tokens? :)
If you're in the US I can burn off an EPROM. If you're in Europe Bad_Ad84 is your man.

My feedback thread, since it seems somewhat difficult for people to find.
