Thread: 38 Studios' assets claimed by Rhode Island

38 Studios' assets claimed by Rhode Island

Since there is no general sub-forum in "Digital Conservation", I thought I'd post this here.

38 Studios' assets claimed by Rhode Island

The assets of defunct Rhode Island-based developer 38 Studios have been transferred to state-controlled bodies that are now looking to sell them on.
The agency and bank said in court papers that it was necessary to take this action, as “all or substantially all of the intellectual property could be irretrievably lost” when the trustee firm appointed to dismantle the company begins abandoning 38 Studios’ property.
a representative of the bank that gave 38 Studios the $75m loan – intend to sell the company’s assets to make up for its outstanding debts.
So is this similar to the Acclaim auction? Will someone be able to buy some SDKs and data backups that possibly contain source code/art for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning?

Uhh, what's this got to do with repair? I'd have put it in general gaming.

They're selling the IP, i.e. the rights to the games. They'll go to developers.

As I said in my post, there is no general sub-forum in Digital Conservation. This is similar to the Acclaim project (if there are data backups for sale). This sub-forum ("Repair, Restoration and Conservation/Preservation") seemed like the closest fit, especially since there are SDKs involved.

The auction listings have been created and Microsoft is trying to get their SDKs back.

No, it should be in General Gaming. The Acclaim section is for the stock that ASSEMbler bought himself from Acclaim. If you want to mention a bankrupt studio, it would be best in General Gaming.

Workstations most likely have nothing on them, it'd be the server that you're looking for if you're after data. And even then, as I said, they'll be selling the IP to the games (just like Acclaim) so it's not like you can legally do anything with it.

What did they actually do? MobyGames only seems to have one game listed - Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Wikipedia lists Project Copernicus as an unreleased title - again, the IP will be up for grabs, no doubt. There's also a mention of a WoW newsletter. Oh, and they acquired Rise of Nations developer Big Huge Games.

As I'm seeing it, it doesn't sound like there'd be much of interest to us, there. They only started in 2006, so you're talking current generation consoles... and BHG started in 2003 but were PC only at first. Acclaim, on the other hand, started in the late 80s and developed for just about every platform you can think of, including arcade. They had lots of titles under their belt, and lots of goodies!

Yes, MS and Sony will want their current generation dev kits back.

By the way, half of that list is audio recording gear, furniture and graphics tablets... so not much of interest to us (although I'm sure there's some cool gear if anyone in the area wants a potentially cheap tablet or something).

The dev hardware will be pulled as technically they are not owned by the default company.

Same happened as acclaim, microsoft showed up with papers and the dev kits were gone
    before open of auction.

This is a new company, with little legacy so don't expect any goodies.

Expect a few wii devkits, some ps3 stuff and they will ONLY sell them to people with paperwork
showing they have a contract with nintendo or sony.

FYI Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning is a good game. Probably a future classic, but in the age of tons of good games, it will probably be forgotten, or go unnoticed.

The good stuff may go, but there are some gems still listed which if people are lucky may not get caught in the net.

Sale 1: Gaming consoles: Xbox 360 XDK consoles, Wii Gaming consoles, Sony Playstation 3 blu-ray console, assorted game controllers, Research library of books, video game library
Sale 2: video game library, reference book library

Could be an interesting trip for anyone with the cash to make the entrance deposit went along.

Jokes aside given that they used tax money maybe you could demand they give you something to compensate for the money that went down the toilet

I remember this case of a steel mill in the 70s that got public funding and then went bankrupt: everybody in that town got half a ton of steel bars

In this case you might get an official 38Studios ashtray....

Dammit, can't take the 16th off or else I'd hit the MD auction.
