MD Cart02 Movie Trading Company THROWING AWAY Genesis & Master System cases

Would have put this in the YouTube thread, but I feel this deserves its own thread.

Billy (of The Game Chasers fame) has discovered that Movie Trading Company, a reasonable-sized mid-US chain of stores, has a policy of throwing out the cases and manuals of traded-in Genesis & Master System games (at the very least, in the ones he's checked around Arlington, TX). If this is more than just the locations in his area, it probably affects all 42 stores (including sister stores Vintage Stock and V-Stock).

Link to his video here (NSFW due to swears): http://youtu.be/LfXdw_d8IgA

If you have a Movie Trading Company, Vintage Stock or V-Stock in your area, go check to find out whether this policy is just in Texas, caused by an over-zealous district manager, or whether this is a more large-scale problem. Either way, this is not positive for US videogame collectors and needs to be stomped out.

They throw away the boxes to save on shelf space. It's nothing new, shops have been doing it for years. In this instance they are probably costing themselves money rather than saving.

You also have to remember that not everbody in the world gives a flying f**k about some plastic box and paper manual for some crappy game that was released before they were probably even born... let alone collect them!

This is retro stuff though, but you nailed it they're costing themselves money rather than saving... Some games have a MUCH higher resale value with a box and manual, take Snowboard Kids 2 for example.

FuncoLand did the same thing when they get too many of the same for display. I had well over 100's of NES boxes (often with manual still inside) for games like PacMania, Fire N Ice, Tengen Tetris, etc.

Sadly 99% of the gamers isn't going to care about missing box or manual, they just want to play.

i worked in babbages and a video store years ago that did the same thing. kept seeing games put up for sale with only the cartrige or disc while the effing cases/manuals/inserts wasted away in a giant box in the back room. it drove my crazy like i was the only person that gave a crap.
    here to learn

Should of thrown them into the boot/trunk of your car, spin the wheels and get the hell out of there.

To me it goes like this. No box, no manual, well fuck it. I may as well play the ROM. For me the whole idea of buying games is to have that feeling of quality with box and manual. A cartridge on it's own is no different than playing the game with something like the Everdrive.

I don't particularly care for getting the box with my games. BUT this is absurd.

I really wonder who the hell buys a cart from 20 years ago with no box or manual these days instead of just torrenting the entire console's catalog

These idiots are losing the very lucrative collector market to cater to who exactly? really dumb parents who can't tell the difference between a Genesis cart and an X360 disc?

    Most retarded biz plan ever...

Gamers, a mediocre chain in Iowa/Nebraska, started doing this recently too. It's really sad companies are just throwing these away instead of listing them on ebay or putting them in a free bin. =(

i sometimes buy cartridge only games simply for playing on the consoles, i prefer full and complete of course but if i wanna play the game i'll buy it to play.

Stuff like this makes me sad. I don't even know how to respond to it. On one hand I'm sad that people neglect perfectly fine collectors items, but on the other hand I'm sad that there's actually people out there who run a business and can't think of ways to make customers happy with these items. Stick them on eBay and actually sell them to collectors, sell them at a car boot sale, or sell them all to me for £10 instead so I can give them away to people for free. It's just a complete and utter waste.

game stop has been doing this for years
when the last generation is about to be removed from the shelves they throw out all the boxes
for example the majority of PS2 games currently sold in game stop have NO art and NO manual

I remember years ago I traded in a boxed Gameboy Advance SP at Gamestop, they test it, then they throw away the box, and only then do they bother to PAY for the system they had just bought.
GameCrazy back then was almost as bad, they didn't even bother trying match up the correct AC Adaptor for the PS1 LCDs, luckily they had 1 new one left.
