Thread: NBA Jam XXX Prototype

  1. #1

    NBA Jam XXX Prototype

    From http://www.nintendoplayer.com/protot...ndo-prototype/

Someone who used to work with Acclaim doing the SNES port of NBA Jam sent a prototype cart to that Nintendo Player site.

The cart has adult (which explains the XXX) commentary lines in it like "No fucking way!" "Hes fucking up!" "Get that shit outta here!"

    Heres the prototype board: http://www.nintendoplayer.com/protot...bajamfront.jpg

    And video footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuX7p...layer_embedded

I know the experts on this forum can tell in a few minutes if that board is fake or real. Interesting stuff.

If this needs to go in the Rare or Unreleased forums please move the thread

Maybe its just a hack that the former acclaim maker made when he was bored or something, I don't know. But I am like 99.999999% sure that that is at least a real snes dev board.

It's a fucking fake! ...at least according to the voice actor, Tim Kitzrow. Taken from Kotaku:

"Looks like the YouTube hacks are at it again," he said. "I'm still friends with a lot of those folks from Acclaim and Iguana and no one knows who is pulling your chain. A good imitation to be sure, but trust me Jam was too big to have ever messed around like that... though I did get a kick out of it and would like to find out who did the impression so I can use him as a stand in when my voice is shot in a session. Thanks for passing this on to me."

It's Kotaku, though. If it were legit, I don't think anyone involved would actually admit it.

What kind of crap picture is this? the roms are not blurred and the pcb is? why? (not to mention the labels look like they are badly photoshopped)
This looks at me a fail attempt to start a rumor or something , quite pointless and annoying

I assume it's blurred because it was scanned with only part of the thing touching the scanner glass.

Though I'm not too knowledgeable on this kind of thing, if it were a different build than the final, wouldn't there be much more byte differences when compared to the final? The sound clips would be different sizes, so any data after it would have to be shifted.

Bullshit, back then you couldn't say asshole on tv (butthole was the placeholder) there's no fucking way this was actually under development

It could be an internal hack they made as a joke, but I doubt it

After the hypefest that was the haunted zelda cart odds are this is just another scammer looking for his 15min of fame

The article claims it was in-house-only. They never said it was under development.

This article sheds some more light on the subject. It might not be fake after all.

    http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mis...lor-recordings

It sounds to me like someone at Acclaim took the unused recordings from the arcade version and made this version as an in-house gag.

replacing soundbytes in an SNES rom isn't unheard of, wonder if it's real or not

I'm willing to bet this is real. Mark Turmell said they recorded a few of those lines and attempted to put them in the game, only having the swear word bleeped but the NBA refused. I recall that the arcade version of NFL Blitz (2001? I forget) had bleeped swear words, so it doesn't seem that unreasonable to think they attempted it with NBA Jam as well.

I guess Kitzrow just doesn't remember recording the lines. I suppose it's understandable since he recorded the unused lines nearly 20 years ago. Either that, or he's just covering someone from Acclaim's ass.

I can't say for sure that this exact prototype is real but I can say that the ROM was not faked. So it may be a copy of a real prototype or it is the real deal. Redeye has one of these prototypes for sale right now on Nintendoage. I do know his came direct from a former employee because I was in talks with the same employee. I too had the chance to buy in but I passed on the offer. The employee had did have more than one

I was told it was an in house gag. They presented it as a final product for final approval to a couple of stiffs who couldn't take a joke just to see the reaction.

went to nintendoage to look at redeyes auction, found this gem post, remembered why i still hate nintendoage

Upon release of the Super Mario All Stars for the Wii I made my around Southern California picking up every one I could find. After about 20 stores and two full days I compiled 50 copies of the game. A lot of them came straight frome purch the box to me. I opened one of them to play and have been storing the remaining copies since the purchase. My original plan was to send them all to VGA and then ignore them for 20 years and start selling them individually.

Imagine what would happen if people hated this place because of the actions of a member or two. Assemblergames would be the most hated place on the net at that point.
