NES controller question

Hey folks, I'm trying to fix a NES controller that is having trouble with down-direction... Looking at the circuit board I can se some black stuff almost warn off.. What is this and can it be fixed easily?

The black stuff is carbon. You might be able to repair it with conductive carbon paint.
