    PAL Turbografx 60hz mod

Is it possible to perform a 60hz mod on a PAL Turbografx? Or its stuck at 50hz forever

    Thanks ^-^

As far as i know the NTSC Turbografx/PC Engine ist clocked 21,47727 Mhz.

I remember me from the 1Chip SNES 50/60 Hz Mod
    http://markus.brandel.bei.t-online.de/1Chip-SNES.bmp

Maybe you can get 60 Hz to change the 17,73.. Mhz xtal to a 21,47.. Mhz xtal ?

The other crystal I think its only for the Sony CX Videoencoder PAL Video signal.

I RGB modded the PAL Turbografx and I receive a colour picture over RGB.
As far as I understand, you need to replace the 17.73MHz clock crystal with a 21.47MHz clock crystal in order to switch it to 60Hz.

Then, once you've done that you need to follow this guide: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/pce/rgb.htm to tap RGB off. You may also have to amplify the signal using this guide: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/pce/amp.htm

Ah thats great thanks - any idea where can I get such a clock crystal to replace?

A broken NTSC TG16 or PCE. You can often find broken consoles on ebay for next to nothing. Also, I believe the SNES uses a 21.47MHz clock as well.

This typically happens when the frequency is increased to 60Hz, but the color coding in the composite signal still has its PAL properties.
Some television sets (Sony trinitron) are capable to recognise the PAL color coding, while operating on 60Hz and then RGB is not needed to display a color picture (although in lower quality ofcourse).

You can get them from electronics suppliers like Mouser too, no need to scavenge busted consoles.

That depends on how accurate it needs to be. For example, Mouser only has a 21.4 MHz osc, not 21.47 MHz. If it's "close enough" then you can get it from Mouser. If it has to be exact, you can't.

You sure about that? I found this on Mouser: http://tinyurl.com/8ozxduk

Very interesting... so I can replace the crystal with that one? Also, how hard is it to replace it? Thanks!

I was looking at oscillators... that's a crystal. Does the TG16 need a crystal or a clock? If it needs a clock, you'd need a few gates and passive devices to go with that crystal to make a clock cirucit.

Those guys there are modding PAL consoles to 60hz.... I wonder how they do it? I'd try them out but the site is in French (I sent them an email but I don't know if they are France only)

It's mainly useful for owners of TVs that accept PAL 60, yet neither RGB or NTSC 60. Otherwise may as well start from a US Turbografx.

I was mostly interested because you can get PAL brand new PC ENgines for cheap.

I know this is a fairly old thread but I was wondering if anybody had any definitive answers regarding this mod? I recently got a boxed PAL turbografx (pretty much for free) which was already RGB and region modded but I'm pretty sure it runs at 50hz which is a bit of a bummer.

The graphics chip was only ever created for NTSC.

There is an extra chip that changes the clock speed dynamically to create fake extra lines at the end of each frame, which slows it down to 50hz. I think it's just a case of bypassing that chip. I don't remember which chip it is, but people have documented it when they tried to figure out just how they persuaded it to output 50hz in the first place.

Should just be oscillator swap, then probably change the ntsc/pal leg on the encoder so it fixes composite
