SNES Region Converter doesn't work (AD-29)
Hi,
I have bought an AD-29 Universal Adaptor Upgrade Version which is one of the best in the market as far as i know.
I have PAL SNES and wanted to play JP carts but there is no audio or video signal just black screen. I tried to just plug in a PAL game but the same so the unit must be broken.
What could be the issue?

ps: i could go with the region mod which is not so hard to do but i'd like to preserve the original unopened shape of my perfect snes if possible (and hence my name..:)

Try placing a game matching the console format (PAL in your case) into the second slot. Lockout data is read from there.
However that device is not a region mod, like you've said. On unopened PAL SNES it will only play NTSC carts that support 50hz.

It would play any NTSC game, except for games with the additional 50/60hz checking in them. Games without that will work at 50hz regardless, just slow etc.
So yes, it is a region mod/bypass - just not a 50/60hz mod.
Yeah AFAIK that extra check is more often found in PAL releases. Part of why these converters are less popular for us NTSC console users.
Eh. I phrased it too literally.
Though it belongs to another topic, the converter does the region bypass only and does not adjust the video clock. There may be certain rare games that doesn't work correctly (or at all) by only the region bypass at 50hz but i know my games should work. already tried with PAL games as i've written.
If you are putting 1 game in, it wont work.
That is why Lum said to put 2 pal games into it.
1 cart is used for the data, the other for the security chip.
Populating 1 slot gives the snes half a cart.
that's what i did.
In that case, your adapter sounds damaged.
They should be pretty simple inside - its just routing pins from 1 cart to the connector to the console and some other pins from the other cart too.
Just open it up, take some pictures and test connections with a multimeter. I have pretty much the same adapter.
Disassmebled and took 2 pictures. Can you see anything suspicious? I don't have a multimeter.

Have you tried cleaning all the connections on the adapter with a SNES cleaning kit? Import adapters often have problems with a poor connection, because now there's 3 total connection points which have to make good contact.
Even if the game has a software region check, a message saying "This game is not compatible with your system" message should still appear on the TV when you power on the console.
Are you 100% sure of this? I think i have read somewhere some games do output this text but thats only the minority. I have japanese Bomberman 2 and 3 and they show only black screen with or without the adaptor. That's the only 2 JP games i have so far and afaik they should work with this adaptor.
Of course i've cleaned the connectors. I always do even before i insert a new cartridge into the console.
