I also have a Happauge 1212. He managed to capture video from a Master System, yet if I try to use mine on my Genesis, the colors on the TV are messed up and the PC side doesn't look like it captures. Explanation please?

However anything past N64, the Happauge has beautiful 720p HD. Don't bother setting it to 1080i if you get it. Progressive Scan is better than interlace, and 720p is still pretty standard for HD. Maybe even better than 1080i.

What software are you using to capture? That can be a huge issue sometimes.

The software it came with, TotalMedia Extreme. Is there a better one to use?

Any video editing software has a capture feature, and any compatible capture device should show up. There are tons out there, most of which are open source. If you;re running Win7 or Vista, Windows Movie Maker is plenty serviceable. Any of the AVS capture software is good.

Look at a few options, and let me know which ones seem to fit your needs. I'll help you decide from there.

A general rule with vidcap is, the simpler the software, the better.

I found a site/store that sells the motherboard to a Hauppage PCR 1212 with all cables for only 69.99. Here's the link:

So this is a fully functional unit?

Technically it's all you need, although no case is a little bit troubling. As long as you have capture software that is compatible with it, you should be fine.

videohelp.com would be a good place to look for software (via tool link, many are free to use), and the forum there can probably help you get the best software for that board.

No board? Psshhh make a clear case out of plexi and admire it when not using it.

This card does not solve the original problem, and is three to four times his budget. I don't want to speak for my friend, but I'm going to put my money on, "No."

apparently you didn't even click the link because the card is listed for $124 currently on amazon
and also the Hauppage Colossus list for $137 witch is one of your friends choices but it only supports component
and the game broadcaster another of your friends choices lists for $141 but has VGA so he would have to buy a $30 VGA converter to use it

    Hello again.
I know its been a while since I last posted since I had since given up on the idea of getting a capture card since it seemed like a chore more than anything.
    Until I heard of this.

seems to be a pretty reliable and can run in 1080p 30fps. It seems to be primarily intended for broadcasting but its an excellent recorder also.
I will get it in a few days so I will be testing it out.

The best HD capture card I know of isn't cheap ($199) but it does do real HD in a PCI Express x1 slot. (there's a version that works with USB 3.0 if you have a brand new PC)

If you getting EZcap, Watch out, the alot clone one out there !
