    Re entry permit

    Hi guys,

I am being extra cautious here...
With the new rules that have just come in to place us foreigners no longer need a re entry permit correct?
Foreigners who have a alien registration card only need the alien registration card and the passport to leave the country (provided they return within a year)

I am just extra paranoid, I know of someone who wasnt allowed to fly a few weeks ago (though that was just before the new rules came in)

Starting this month, if your visa is up for renewal, your gaijin card will be changed to the resident card and you will no longer need the re-entry permit.

yeah, pretty sure you need the resident card for the no-re-entry permit to apply. If your'e still on the old gaijin card, probably still need it.

Quoted for truth! I've been fucked over many a time by using common sense that would result in a good outcome in the UK and I'm sure in most modern western countries but not here.

Or our star prize of a shower with someone called Kuma with some very slippery soap that he might ask you to pick up.

But on this game no one goes away empty handed, no sir-ee, if you come last then you'll still get swift passage through immigration.

A special re-entry permit system will be introduced.

Foreign nationals in possession of a valid passport and resident card (*1) who will be reentering Japan within 1 year of their departure to continue their activities in Japan(*2) will, in principle, not be required to apply for a re-entry permit. (This is called a special re-entry permit.)

Be sure to present your resident card at departure.

Foreign nationals who have departed from Japan on a special re-entry permit will not be able to extend that permit while abroad. Please note that such foreign nationals will lose their resident status if they fail to re-enter Japan within 1 year of their departure (*2).
(*1) The special re-entry permit system also applies to those in possession of a passport stating "A resident card is to be issued later", or an alien registration certificate deemed to be equivalent to the resident
(*2) If your period of stay expires within 1 year after your departure, please ensure that you re-enter Japan before the expiration of your period of stay.
The special re-entry permit system does not apply to those falling under any of the following.

    • Those whose resident status is in the process of rev"

I've been told that I can travel now even though the visa renewal/Resident Card are still processing and just need to show my Gaijin Card in place of my Resident Card when going through Re-entry line.

    Update 1
I phoned, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) and the MOFA's said that I can travel!

Dont worry they said I dont need a reentry visa considering i have an alien registration card.
I actually spoke to a great person who was laughing and joking with me- very surprised!
And very relieved but we shall see tonight when I got to the airport!

so it seems like you don't need residents card
until 2015 or your card expires :)

For anyone reading, I think you have to re-enter within a year, or your visa will be invalidated. That would suck for any PR holders leaving for extended periods who forgot their sticker.

I am not sure about PR holders but when going out of Japan you get a small piece of paper stating that your visa will be invalidated if you do not re-enter within a year so be careful.
In Kansai airport there is a "residents holder" queue now, though when the Japanese queue emptied the resident holders/alien registration card holders were ushered into the Japanese queue.

Is that queue for the way out or the way in? There has traditionally been a re-entry permit line in Japan which rarely has more than 5 people in it. Wonder if they'll have resident card holders line, plus re-entry permit line.

All I know is that when I come back to Japan I always use the same line as the Japanese do. I feel guilty though as many none Japanese people in the other line give you nasty looks as they wait in a never moving line.

This was on the way in and in Kansai Airport. Other airports might be different.
