Getting VGA out of my Saturn

So I made a Saturn VGA cable and even installed a 3.5mm jack for audio out, now I need a VGA to RGBS adapter and I was wondering if this would get the video signal to my monitor finally.

I'll assume the thing you want to do here is to convert the RGBS output of your Saturn to a VGA signal since the converter you linked is for that purpose and not the other way around at all.

I use the very same converter to plug both my RGB modded N64 and PSX on my NTSC LCD TV via VGA. Works real good for the price.

There is no analog or digital noise filter on this unit so make sure your connection between your console and the converter is well shielded for best visual performance.

If you plan on using the DB15 input connector, note that the H-Sync pin of the same connector is the input pin of C-Sync signal from RGBS. You can try to use Luma signal from S-Video or Composite video signal as a source of C-Sync.
Sometime it will improve image quality, there is no exact answer on which signal is best because it varies for every console. My N64 works best with Luma as C-Sync but my PSX works better with the real C-Sync signal.

I hope it was the confirmation you wanted! You can go check threads concerning RGB modded N64, alot of users use that particuliar converter along with the modded console.

Hi, I'm very confuse all this stuff, I done so many research and it is hard to understand what need to be done, I want to play My sega saturn, PS1 and Gamecube on my Monitor which is 22inch 1080P, My monitor does play my PS3 and XBOX360 through HDMI cable which is all good. Even it has VGA Input and HDIM Imput. So I hoping I can Play Retro console on it too. Can you help me to link those equipment stuff that you use for your retro console from website ? That would be make it easier for me

    Thanks!

You need an upscaler. Old consoles like the Saturn only output 15khz RGB signal (with C-sync), monitors need 31khz RGB (with H/V-sync). Putting a VGA cable on the Saturn only makes it easier to connect the console to certain CGA -> VGA upscalers (cga being 15khz rgb too). You won't be able to connect it to a monitor just with that, unless you have a special multisync monitor that can use 15khz RGB signal (ex. old Commodore Amiga monitors).

Ok, first of all to use the CGA2VGA scaler, your console must output RGB.

I know PS1(any region) does but I can't tell for a NTSC Saturn.

What I can tell you is that a NTSC Gamecube does NOT output RGB. The best possible connection method on the Analog port is S-Video if you have an older NTSC Gamecube with a Digital AV port you can buy one of those expensive component cable. Either way, if you have a NTSC Gamecube, you will not be able to use a CGA2VGA scaler. You will need a straight converter from S-Video/Component to VGA/HDMI depending on your configuration. You could use the Scaler to plug in Component signal from the gamecube to convert it to VGA but I wouldn't recommend it. I tried it with a PS2 and the image was worst than plugging it directly to my HDTV (which has component in).

Back to the scaler for the PS1 (and possibly Saturn). The CGA2VGA scaler linked in this thread have a convenient DB15 (VGA) port which can be interfaced to receive RGBS Video signal. Just check the pinout of a VGA connector and map the signals accordingly:

    RGBS ----------- VGA
    R ------------- R
    G ------------- G
    B ------------- B
    C-Sync -------- H-Sync
    Nothing -------- V-Sync

Of course all grounds on either sides are linked. Leave V-Sync open. You don't need to tie it to ground or anything.

You might need to place 220uF Capacitors on the R,G and B lines, anode facing the RGBS connection.

Boot the scaler and make sure input is set to RGBS. Adjust the potentiometer on the scaler to correct any discoloration of the input.

To reduce the number of cable and adapters, I mounted DB15 connectors directly on the consoles themselves to route the RGBS signals out of there. A simple VGA cable going from the console to the scaler does the trick. There are various sites that can tell you the pinout of all the signals present on each console's AV connectors. Use that to help you. http://www.gamesx.com/ is a good reference along with http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/. Mmmonkey is reconstruting their site so some info might be missing right now.

If you have any other questions regarding your issues, make a thread and point me to it if you want my help.

Arcadeforge has converters that split the composite sync from composite video, so you only need an rgb scart output for any console and hook it up directly to the scaler.

I have an upscaler and I have a professionally made VGA cable I just need to get them to display video and I was hoping the device I linked to would do the job.

The device you linked to is an upscaler, but if you already have one why not use that instead of buying another?

Yes, NTSC Saturns can output RGB.
