Wow this is indeed DOOMED to fail. You must have a lot of information to have all those variable completely figured out and to know exactly what is going to happen.

Well, everyone listed on their Kickstarter (but not their terrible website) has exactly zero experience with consoles. So far the only game they have is a shitty FPS. And of course not everyone is going to use it for pirated games, but there's a sizable chunk of users who are just going to use it for their emulators and pirated movies. (and of course there's the people who want to play indie games, because they just can't get enough of the steady stream of shitty zombie and fake 8-bit games on PC)

Actually looking at the video for sky gamblers it looks like it could be a lot of fun. (at least being played with a controller they look like they could be fun).
The articles are fun too they show lot's of things that COULD go wrong or arent' explained yet. With just about much backing as your statements.

I can see you possibly doing it for $200 and easily for $300, but no way in hell for $70. I can see the Ouya being good to emulate everything up till N64 maybe Dreamcast, but I can't see a $70 pc doing better than that either.

Oh and as far as the HTPC thing goes my mistake. I misread that. $100 could definitely be a good start to an HTPC and $300 should definitely build a 1080p capable media system with good emulator capability.

That depends on your definition of "good". Today's accurate emulators for 8 and 16-bit consoles are barely within reach of its 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9. Tomorrow's emulators spawned from the emerging low-level movement will be completely out of reach. And this is with native apps, VM apps can expect an order of magnitude hit.

System-wide accuracy. Emulators are emerging that go past "cycle-accuracy"/pseudo-accurate timekeeping and actually implement components as state machines only slightly abstracted from their silicon. The goal isn't just to offer superior component synchronization and edge case handling, it's to produce an elegant and efficient (albeit slower) model.

Then there's display emulation. Beyond pixel accuracy there have been efforts to simulate CRT characteristics such as the correct pixel aspects, barrel distortion, raster bloom and the shadow mask/aperture grille. On top of that there are NTSC and PAL "filters" which generate and decode the composite signal in software. These are things lots of nostalgic people want and have already caught on.

Then there's sound. We're seeing more emulators implement high-order FIR filters for alias-free resampling. Just this feature will load a CPU as much as ZSNES.

Sure not everyone wants these features and they're not necessary to play games (debatable) but its the direction emulation is taking and if people want to use the latest builds that add other attractive features, they'll probably need the speed. Current-gen consoles as well as mid-high end desktops can handle the load of these features today, so personally I'll stick to the better, already available, hardware. Yes there's the argument of cost, but eh AMD Trinity systems will be cheap.

People buying the Ouya should do so for today's Android games and streaming stuff, it won't make a particularly attractive emulation platform. There will be plenty of other SoC platforms out soon enough... By 2014 it seems ARM SoC will be able to LLE PS2.
