    Painting consoles - impregnating paint?

I've been looking in to painting my new(old) SNES. I'd retrobrite it but i don't have an UV light or a good spot in the sun.

Haven't had much luck with regular spray point in the past - it always looks nice but not 100% and i don't want to go throught the hassle of sanding and painting just to get a just not 100% result.

I once saw a link of someone painting xbox controller shells with some kind of water solubale paint. Can't seem to find the link or any info about it - could someone point me in the right direction?.

Should this work this seems like a better solution then spray paint - less chance to mess-up and less fragile!

There are mixtures that work without UV or sunlight.

My personal favorite is "vinyl dye," which actually briefly alters the plastic so that a true dye can penetrate the plastic and permanently stain it.

It gives a "no-relief" finish, can't scrape or flake off, and looks terrific.

Here's some units I have modded (the "specks" you see are small dust particles that settled on the surface and are reflected in the flash. The finish is actually quite smooth, and flawless) - -

    And, a grey one - -

Works great on GAMECUBE front plates, too - -

And, here's the product I use, "VHT Vinyl Dye" - -

    Great stuff, highly recommend it.

Wear a respirator, take precautions. This stuff is seriously toxic. Smell fades from painted objects in a week or so, and it looks and feels like manufactured plastic.

Very true - - he does.

However, as I understand, I've heard he buys large cans of vinyl dye and either dips the carts, or maybe uses a professional spray gun to apply the vinyl dye?

Whatever the case, they come out great. I just received my Mega EverDrive, in Red, and it is fantastic-looking!

Watch this video clip! It's a quick video for painting vinyl and plastic interior panels. With this being said, car interior panels will take much more wear and tear than your console or controllers. So if you follow his steps 100% and you can carefully mimic his spraying technique it will last forever and look fantastic.

EDIT: Looks like atari2atari is using a comparable product to whats featured in the video. This guy will show you how to properly use the vinyl spray!

    Thanks for the help all!

This seems more like it - i'll have to go to a bigger store this weekend, my local diy only offers all-purpose paint. Now to decided on a colour scheme!

well, you'll probably looking for the best paint suitable on plastic ( or your console's material ). I did 2 console painting in my live, it was on 2 n64. The first was totally screwed up, 'cause I didn't applied a primer before painting ( ! xD ) and the second one is good looking but has also is lot of defaults ( some paint blemishes, etc ). Overall, I dont very advice anyone to paint their console except if they are ready for a careful job and aer equipped with some suitable equipments.

exemple, always after applying the paint, I was always putting the console outside so it can dry regurlarly.

    anyway, good luck ! :)

I used vinyl spray on two consoles and they turned out great.

You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.

I have used vinyl dye also for several system. Too bad here in the USA we are limited to about 4-8 colours. In the UK you can get 80+ colours
