Does the red led turn on when powered up without a game in? I'm wondering because I picked one up at a swap meet for $5 and it appears to come on but the light is not. I don't have any games to test ATM so I can't verify.

I believe it should
It will come on. The LED is nothing more than a power on indicator. I know having 2 model 1 and 2 model 2 Genesis. If your LED fails to light but everything else turns on, it could be dead or the resistor is fried. Worst case scenario the power adapter is dead or the voltage regulator is dead. Only way to know for sure is to get some games and see. I have a few for sale for dirt cheap in the user market place if interested.

yes mate the LED should always light up regardless of the cart status, its possible that its a faulty console mate or the LED is damaged (have had a few that i have had to replace over time) but you should get a game to testOriginally Posted by superspeed
Thanks for the info. I opened it up to clean it and noticed that the power port had a cold solder joint on it so I resoldered it and it appears to be coming on, but I won't know for sure until I get a game for it.
i have some spare games knocking about mate if you need one, where are you located? happy to send one out to you

your welcome, just got back from the post office, game on its way mate, could only find one Cart (was in a rush) but its a multi-game cart (one of the Mega Games) so has 3 games on it, should be with you in a few days

Recieved the game. Thank you so much BTW it works!!!!! YaY Still no power led for some reason but it does work. I'll probably trace down the resistor fo it and mabe even change the color of it while I'm at it.
