I think this thread has devolved into subtly mocking the entire system.

lol, exactly. i haven't seen many thanks outside of this thread. except for one case where the thanks system was used as an unofficial voting system to have a user banned. HA! Thanks indeed...

I think it has benefits over the rep system. With the rep system you had to rep that person, and then you have to rep other people before you can rep the first person again. What if that person makes lots of helpful posts?

How often does a user make a row of consecutive helpful post's that you stumble upon before any other single user has a chance to be helpful? Never has happened to me here.

Is there a page that lays out how the rep system works? Or does anyone know how much rep I gotta dish out before I give someone I've already given rep to more rep?

This is exactly what should have happened to this thread. :)

Every post I make is helpful, so I understand where they're coming from.

    LONG POST ALERT!!!

    Where do I start...

For one thing, the thanking system seems useful enough for the reasons stated earlier. Someone makes a very useful post that helps out many members with something. Methinks that is enough to warrant a thanking system. Many things could be considered useful for thanking. Examples: getting a game to function with the Everdrive flash carts, fixing a hardware problem that has plagued many people, new software that is very useful like stuff for ripping hard to dump games from optical media, new game designed from ground up that seems very popular, ect.

At the same time, it can also be a royal pain in the ass. As an example: Someone decides to go trolling and is called out in the most embarrassing way. Many members thank this person who called the troll out for what? For making a completely sarcastic comment that shuts the troll up? How does that warrant being thanked? Everyone by then should be able to see that the guilty party is obviously a troll and to be avoided.

Then there is the issue of someone who goes and thanks random members just for the hell of it. Bad move in my book. Said member is obviously a butt kissing suck up. HATE THAT...

Finally there is this thread where every post has at least 2 members thanking the poster. Come on people! Do we REALLY need to sink to the level everyone is complaining about to make a point? How about this instead, you moderate yourself with the thanking system as you see fit. If you don't like the way it is going, DEAL WITH IT! We can't always get our way in life. Gotta make compromises. I did with some of the features of this forum. So feel free to share your dislikes or likes about the system but DON'T MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT!! Several posts by one member complaining about one thing makes said member look like a whiny teenage girl who got her phone and car keys taken away to me.

I am finished. Let the thanks to me for this post come in since I know you will do it despite me not really caring about it one way or another. I just had to make this so maybe the bullshit going on here will finally stop and we can go on discussing important things that members actually care about a bit more than THIS.

The thank system coexists with the rep system.

A thumbs up / thumbs down system would be better than pure like... but we had that with the rep system anyway.

The thanks system makes the thanks more visible though.... but a visible no thanks would be nicer if we proceed along these lines too.

Don't get me wrong on my negative views of the thanking system. I'm just pointing out what I've seen here in my 8 month membership. My goal here is to learn new things, help people out with issues or questions if I know about the subject, get helped out alike, and to trade stuff.
