Note on the left side of the end: "Amid the controversy surrounding the extra gory original opening movie which had been edited out of the North American PSX release, someone at Capcom slipped up and a number of Saturn copies were released with the original Japanese intro intact. The full scene includes a chewed off hand and a brief clip of Chris smoking a cigarette, something that was unacceptable to Sony at the time. The uncut opening has since been ripped and spread across the internet, though special copies have still been known to fetch a handsome price."

The PC release featured the 'uncut' intro too so it's quite widely available already.

This whole thing about a Saturn uncut Bio Hazard intro is bull shit IMO. I've had access to well over 50 copies of this game and they all have the same cat number. The ones that i have tried all had the smoking in it. Not sure about the hand but that's probably in there too. I don't really care to be honest which is why I don't remember.

You accessed 50 copies of U.S. resident Evil on Saturn, and one of them is uncut?

This story makes no sense due to the way CD-ROMs are produced. CD-ROMs are produced by many thousands at a time. There is no way some small number of discs with different content "slipped out". There isn't a guy in a room with a CD writer that churns these out. They are professionally produced in a factory. Again, batches of thousands of discs are produced at a time.

That's because it doesn't exist. This is all internet rumor mill crap. Capcom didn't "slip up" and release "a number of copies" with a different/Japanese intro video.

Again, CD-ROMs are manufactured in large numbers, we are talking probably 10,000 discs or more at once. There is basically no way that any different commercial version of Resident Evil for Saturn exists. Discs for consumers are not produced by "some guy" or "one by one". They are manufactured in a factory in mass numbers. Although, anyone could easily provide an ISO of Saturn Resident Evil and just swap the video file from the japanese version, or possibly edit the video file to get whatever intended result is desired.

It wouldn't be impossible that they made wrong copies, halted production, trashed the discs, and made new ones.

But yeah, it's probably just a stupid fucking rumor. God knows, Resident Evil 1-2 has so many of them. Are we still trying to unlock Akuma in RE2?

its possible that there was a limited test / QA run they noticed the mistake and changed it before the final run of discs and some were saved etc but i doubt it.

i'm now interested to watch the intro for my pal copy of resident evil to see if the smoking and hand is there or not i cant remember

The only "copies" of this I have and seen are fan made hacks the recoded the PC video into the PS1 version. A guy named Taximan and I tried it for the Saturn with some success. We did get the intro video working using the true motion tools around but we had to use some Biohazard files and it isnt 100% in English but about 90% I would say is though. Only the journal notes and the item screen is in Japanese still.

They press discs from the same glass master. I doubt they would make such a mistake, but then again we had director's cut mishap.

Did Capcom ever state that Chris is a smoker in the RE universe outside of the games?
Other than RE1 of course, I did notice something in RE6 when he's sitting at that bar in Europe. You don't see him actually smoke, but a cigarette is smoking away in the ashtray right next to him.
Maybe it's just a little nod to the fans or something :/
