Having in account that you own a Dev kit, Wow thats some lousy knowledge you have on the dreamcast, calling the drive DVD drive, its not a dvd drive, its a GD-ROM drive.

I dont think you are going to find one. Best bet would be to repair your current drive.

superspeed your attitude isn't going to win you any friends.

I'm sure pedro was not trolling you, merely correct you, but yes not in the best of ways either.

I dismantled the first 5.24 I owned many years ago.

If you open the disc tray you will see a retail style GD laser unit is present (it is the same deal with Naomi GD too)

I heard rumours there is a cutom firmware on the device but never anything solid. Before you do anything drastic have you tried adjusting the laser alignment screw a small fraction to see if there is any improvement?

If you haven't done it already, you could try swopping it out with a retail Dreamcast GD unit and see what happens. Unfortunateloy I gifted my two spare GD units to a board member the other week so I am unable to help you source one but if you have or can get a retail DC, it is only a matter of a few screws to see what happens.

Yes but if he didn't have one to offer he could have just skipped over and not posted something useless. I'm well aware that it is a GD-rom drive, just used to saying dvd drive. I'm just wanting to restore this unit back to working order. You say a standard dreamcast laser will work on it? Also I need the clasp at the back that holds the drive in but thats not really that big of deal because a simple toggle will engage the drive while it's open. But I'd like to put OEM parts in it and not rig it.
