ED64 & VGA Box

Hello everybody,

First of all, thanks Krikzz for the ED64 and the community for being so active.

My ED64 works well on my HDTV via RCA.
But when i plug my N64 + ED64 with a VGA Box, it does not work.

When the VGA Box is off, my LCD Screen is blue, and when i turn my N64 on, the screen is black, then it jump to blue, then black...

I only have this problem with the ED64, i have tried Banjoo & Tooie and Mario 64 ( real cartbridge ) and everything was fine.

I use this Vga Box ( http://www.clubic.com/article-15174-...on-screen.html ), works well with a PS2/Xbox/NGC.

The box is set to 640x480, the lcd screen is a 4/3 at 1280x1024 ( native ) but it support smaller resolution.

I also want to know if i can use a scanline generator like the SLG3000 with my vga box + ED64.

I believe this has something to do with the ed64 menu running at high resolution. I seem to remember this coming up before in another thread or something. Try hooking the n64 up normally, run it with the everdrive and select a low resolution game like Mario 64, then plug it back into the VGA box and see if it works.

I also remember this thread, but what if i only have a LCD screen in my room ?
There is no solution ?

What can i do if im using a computer LCD screen ?

Edit 2 : Even if i change video source, i cant see the menu.

Edit 3 : I can see the menu during 1 sec then i have blue/black screen if i start my vga box on svideo mode.
Please Krikzz, can you do something ?

Edit 4 : Krikzz said that older OS has smaller resolution, well older OS works, but i have an error message : error init : 50
The screen is stable btw.
Is it difficult to make a 1.27 version with 240p menu ?

Im not the only person with this problem.

Edit 5 : I have installed the OS 1.13, i have the fw 2.20 ( ED64 v2), when i get init error 50, i push start, then IT WORKS !!!

The problem now, its an old version...

A 1.27 with 240p menu would be perfect Krikzz :-)

may be i will make low res version at some day, but currently i have no plans to make low resolution version of menu, cuz it pretty hard. why i should fix the problems of unofficial accessories and modded systems? ed64 works in the bounds of official specification of n64, I use 640x480, same as some games, and it works fine if you not mod your system. So, ask to do something those guys, who make this semi-working vga box or mods, cuz problem in this things, and not in ed64


P.S. Before, people crying that menu looks like piece of crap, now other people, who want to mod their systems, must pay for new menu. i would leave all as was before, cuz design don't give any benefit (damn, i hate modern tendency to decorate all, even PC bios and boards inside of PC, especially i HATE glossy plastic everywhere) but most people think in other way. I like when cars and in-home decor has good design, but i don't care how looks my phone or gui in my OS, such things should be simple and handy and untouched by the hands of designers.

I doubt the mods are themselves the issue. My suspicion is that 640x480 was not part of the rgb-scart standard, so TVs or converters shouldn't be expected to accept it from that input type. 640x480 is what dreamcast vga uses after all.

may be possible to fix this problem if os will change display timings configuration, but i have only regular n64 and can't test it

It's relatively easy enough for a modder who owns an rgb mod n64 to test my idea. They'd need to find a circuit that separates sync into H-sync and V-sync, then insert it into a custom cable that goes the Nintendo AV connector and a vga connnector. After all that use a high-res mode game like ed64's menu. If really proper 640x480 it should get identical results to dreamcast.

But you did it with first releases, you cant just put a low res munu on last release ?

True, 480p is not the usual resolution for a N64 game.

If you need a tester for testing OS, i can do it, i will answer to you very quickly.
I have to stick with the OS 1.13.

i can't just copy the code of old menu to new OS. some n64 games use 640x480, so not all your games work

If the menu is in fact 640x480 with correct display timings, then it's already VGA. Most VGA boxes aren't designed to accept input in the form they output. You could confirm this assertion by chaining two VGA boxes together but I seriously don't think it'll work.

640x480 with an RGB to component transcoder however should look amazing. PS2/Gamecube 480p enabled games are designed for component at 640x480.

I have a HD BOX PRO which is a very good component to vga transcoder, i should try to link it with a RGB to component and see if it works, and the quality also lol.

Huh? You have a TV that accepts 240p and 480p over component? A lot won't do one or the other...

No it only accepts 480i no progressive. I have it hooked up through one of those Jrok component video encoders.

I guess so. I'd honestly never NEVER until today heard of n64 being cable of interlacing video. But if that's what high res mode does, very interesting.
