    It's because of the name, makes you think both the i3 and the i5 are scaled down versions of the i7.

    Because it has 2 cores and 2 threads, so those extra threads show up as "cores" in the Task Manager.

    Haha, at first glance I thought it was Quark or one of the other Ferengi from Deep Space Nine, such a resemblance.

    Thanks for the tips people, I think I know now what's realistic for my price range. Think I'll have a shop about and see what I can find in stores as we can get discount, it's just a matter of choosing between a desktop or a laptop. While its nice to have a portable computer being able to upgrade component by component is something to seriously consider as ultimately I'd like to have a powerful machine, it's just expensive to pay for it all in one. I'm thinking desktop is the way to go though, are there any brands I should avoid?
