Well I'm in the exact same situation, and desperately trying to find a way to retrieve my game saves.

When I called sony they said they swap the console "like for like" for £110 and get 3 months warranty.
I asked if they could repair my console, but they don't. So I said what about all my data? They said they don't provide any data retrieval because it's on a third party device.

So the only solution I can think of is to repair the console and hope it works long enough to backup all my data.

I'm going to use this repair service I found on ebay --> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2907014981...84.m1423.l2649

If anyone has got a better solution, please share

I used that repair service and got the PS3 back today, its working again!
    Also got 2months warranty

Anyway gonna order a external hdd and back up everything!
At least I can say this solution works, but what a pain in the ass. Thanks Sony
