If it's the ebay listing one, the display showed E which means Error/missing boot files. You'll need to install the DDH files for your hardware release version (which will NOT be HW2!) and (with the cables all connected) move the .abe files over to the root of the DDH unit. Then upon restart of the PC and DDH you should see an 8 on the display with a flashing dot.
To actually use the system, you'll need a null modem serial cable and a COM port on your PC, and a network connection between the DDH and your PC (direct using a crossover cable works best), and the marlin board installed with all drivers and the DDH software installed, then you can use the marlin commands to boot the files on the hard drive, if there's anything on there.
EDIT: Also just read the other post, you can plug the drive in to a normal PC if you want, it's formatted as FAT and can be read in windows and linux, though if the machine is displaying E then either the drive is broken, corrupted or someone removed the boot files from it. If it's been formatted/deleted then you can try file recovery software on it. Having the drive connected directly to your PC isn't that much different from having it in the DDH unit with it all connected up fine, both communicate via IDE and both appear as fully accessable hard drives, except you need to disable DMA if using it in the DDH.
