Month of Dreamcast

In one month, I've found three Rev0 Dreamcasts. It's probably one of my best sets of finds since I've been collecting eons ago.

The first I found was an American Rev0. I got it as a broken system for the shell.....for 5 dollars. The top half is a Sega branded (read: not third party) clear shell that was only made in Japan. A few colors were released, only 1000 a color were made. I was happy enough with the shell, it wasn't until later did I realize it was a Rev0. The system is completely functional though. Why it was listed as broken, I'll never know.

The second I found not even a week later (in fact, I think it was three days later) for 15 dollars. It's an import (Japanese) model. Of course, those did not have the number in a circle type classification that the US systems did. The way to tell is the fact that like other Rev0s, the fan and cooling system is different, and also that the modem is missing. It's just hollow shell. The system came with two Sega branded tremor packs, two Sega branded VMUs, one Sega branded 4 in 1 memory card (has 4 orange triangle lights on top), controller and hook ups.

The third I found today. And it's probably the most interesting. It's an American Rev0 DC like the first, but the shell is original. However, unlike the first one, the modem is missing with an empty shell like the Japanese one. Furthermore, the screws that hold the shell in place are Torx screws, which is unlike any regular/Rev0 Dreamcast anyone I know has seen. Furthermore, the console was assembled with a different sticker orientation (it's flipped) with a slightly different looking/placed barcode. The system came with an official Dreamcast steering wheel, VMU, tremor pack, controller and cords.

Couple in the PSone with screen, controller and hook ups I got for 15 bucks, and the official Sega DC arcade fighting stick for 35 dollars and it's a heck of a way to close out a month. :D

The clear tops were sold in the US, very rare though. I almost bought it a few times, but never did.

I wasn't aware Sega actually produced ones in America. Are you sure (do you have pics?). Either way, these seem to be the Japanese version, if there are two versions.

Easy way to tell is the grey triangle "jewel" which was solid grey in the US, and clear/silver in japan. ;)

Na, the Dreamcast was still on the shelf at the time. It is quite possible that it was the Japanese version (I did later find a few import games there, although it was a normal Software Etc), but some stores certainly had them at some point.

That's interesting. I was told by two separate sources that they only made them for Japan. If they sold those imports here that would be kinda neat. Then again, I know at least early on in the DC's life span, I remember quite a few stores selling import software. So who knows, maybe they sold a few of those clear shells too.

Well, I'm pretty sure these could never have been demos or kiosk systems. Because the demo-kiosk models were labeled as such on the sticker. I know this because I just found one today, haha. Can't make this stuff up. Pics soon.

A collector probably died recently and his relatives dumped everything.

If you saw the condition I found some of these in before I cleaned them up, and got the blemishes and scratches off the systems, you'd know there was no way in hell any collector ever owned them :P. Seriously, some of these were ROUGH. Magic Erasers for the win, though :).

These Dreamcasts have heat sinks, heat pipes, a metal enclosure for the fan, and a radiator. So, at the very least, rarity aside, they run a lot cooler than your typical Dreamcast (Rev1 or Rev2) that only have a plastic fan for cooling the whole system. Rev0 means Revision 0. Any Dreamcast you'll find usually has a 1 or a 2 in the circle next to the region code (if its American). Only Rev0s will display a 0 in the circle. Another great thing about these units is that they have higher quality GD-Roms in them. So they shouldn't burn out... and because of the high quality cooling parts, it won't ever overheat.

Thanks! Yeah, the clear shell is really great. I love that it's Sega branded. 3rd party shells never have the Sega, Dreamcast, and Windows logos which takes away from their value in my eyes. The fact it's really rare is just a cherry on top. Everyone keeps trying to buy it off me, but I've been collecting Dreamcast stuff for years, and have never even heard of it. So I'll be keeping it for sure.

If you have more questions, I'll do my best to answer them. Unfortunately, not much is really known about these things. What is "known" is usually proven wrong when a new system is found, disproving previous assumptions about the system. The third Rev0 I have for instance, with the odd stickers and the torx screws with the hollow modem shell only JP systems should have is making a lot of guys who I've been learning from scratch their heads.

this is not entirely true, I have a R1 PAL dreamcast that has a metal fan inside. its a shame nobody every found out how many different dreamcasts there really are; would've helped us out a lot

I never once claimed knowledge of PAL systems. I never brought them up because they are completely different. No actual branded "Rev 0" systems were made, but there have been people who have claimed those parts exist in later revisions over there. Not though for the US, and with Japanese consoles it's only the first batch of launch day systems (or kiosk systems) that have these parts. In the US, we know they started with Rev 1 at launch, and that there are also Kiosk systems with Rev 0 parts. The mystery here, which I've explained in my post, is where the Rev 0 systems in the US have come from and from when. No one has a concrete answer on that, and those are the ones that are highly sought after over here.


And as far as up coming games, I'm really looking forward to Girl Fighter. They just announced they are going to try to do a DC port.

What are the North American rev0 units worth and are there any functional advantages to having one? I bought a broken one (the F1 problem) a few years ago and just repaired it last month.
