I don't know about the journalistic integrity or how 'new' this news actually is but if its true its very sad for everyone gamers and staff alike.

Hopefully they can get back on track without too many people losing thier jobs.

I might buy some sega games from xbox live this weekend to help them out!

They may give whatever PR spin reason for it, but we all know it's because, except for whatever XBLA ports they're making, their games are shit now.

I'm not entirely sure about the journalistic intergity either, but if the projected and actual figures mentioned are correct then no amount of PR spin is going to hide the fact Sega is doing half as well as it anticipated. Regardless of why this is the case, based on the numbers given we can expect most new games to be reviewed before any further work is carried out. The various retro ports that have been promised are unlikely to be breaking the budget (although the rumoured Shenmue I & II pack might if the textures are being redrawn rather than simply upscaling the original's artwork), so these will probably be safe.

On the other hand, the loss of staff and warnings of projects having to be cancelled does suggest a serious reduction in the company's output, if not perhaps full closure. As with the post-hardware corporate reshuffling, Sega has proved that it can adapt in the short term to maintain its long term future, and at this early point it's certainly not a done deal that Sega will soon be no more. Even if considerable losses are the outcome of this market miscalculation, I have a feeling the name at least will remain in some shape or form, perhaps in a similar capacity to SNK - in other words, trading exclusively on its heritage rather than even attempting to keep up with its once equal rivals.

P.S. Is anyone still holding their breath for Shenmue III now?

Saw it at the Verge, waiting for gamasutra but its pretty much verified by now...

So segammy might bite the dust, big fucking deal guys, I'm not a bit sad for this, the end of the Dreamcast was a tragedy, but segammy paying the price for destroying SEGA's legacy is actually good news.

These assholes made almost NOTHING in the past 11 years.

Compare this period to the 11 years between 1990 and 2001: in that time SEGA brought us the Genesis, the SegaCD, the GameGear, the 32X, the Saturn, the Dreamcast, the original 5 Sonic games, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Shining Force, NiGHTS, literally TONS of great games both in consoles and the Arcades. Some flaws aside these were all memorable products and amazing games, each pushed the market forward from CDs to 3D games to Online play. The SEGA everybody talks about is that SEGA, not this bullshit we have right now.

But segammy in 11 years gave us shit after shit, half-assed ports and "collections"(rehashes) and half-A quality games, let alone completely destroying the Sonic franchise. The few things worth mentioning were remnants from Dreamcast development and games made by 3rd parties, that's all.

What segammy just realized is that they cant keep shoveling shit to us and pretend to make a profit.

Sega of the last 2-3 years has been amazing. The Yakuza franchise on ps3, Vanquish, Sonic Generations...so many to list.

I hope they don't cancel Yakuza 5. Its huge in Japan and the new one was going to have a brand new battle and graphics engine.

Sonic Generations was a mediocre platform game that only broke the ice because of the nostalgia factor.

Vanquish is from ex-Capcom Platinum Games, just like Bayonetta...

And sonic generations was only good compared to the shit that were previous sonic games

Even though Sonic Generations was alright, the framerate issues make it seem like a fan game at times and there was a lack of classic Mega Drive levels; Rooftop Run, Crisis City and Planet Wisp were all awful, and I doubt anyone would've missed them if they'd been replaced with classic levels. What kills Generations for me is the length: in about six hours you'll see everything in the game, which is inexcusable for a game that was $40 at launch.

Panzer Dragoon Orta was fantastic! that came out in the last 11 years so not everything was wank. Also, Sega's Xbox live games have all been quality titles the last few years. So what if they are ports. The fact is that they were ported and ported very well is worthy of praise. They ported what we wanted.

It's cool to bash Sega and yes, they have released a lot of shit but just look at Konami. They're not even a spec to what they were in the past. Nintendo also. They make pretty much re-hash after re-hash staring Mario but nobody seems to give a shit. Sure, they all play well but that's because they don7t change anything. Also, many of their so called 1st part games are 3rd party produced.

Pretty much all game companies are not what they were these days and those that didn't change have long gone. NCS Misaya, Compile, Technosoft, Hudson and many more. Sad days I know.

Yes, it was, and Outrun 2, After Burner Climax and F-Zero GX were too...sometimes there has been a glimpse of the Sega of old, but since the DC died they started mainly producing crap. The Daytona port was also great because it was by far the best version of a game that everyone's been asking for a good port of for almost 20 years, but I can't bring myself to get excited about ROMs being crapped out onto XBLA.

And I really wish Compile was still around and making shooters instead of Puyo Puyo...

People don't bash Sega because it's fashionable they bash them because the majority of their modern output is lacklustre at best. They take old ip's & then manage to make them worse, nights & samba are two good examples, it's frustrating as when Sega are on form they can create amazing games that easily equal Nintendo's finest however for most of the time they don't.

Last sega game i really enjoyed was Bayonetta before that it was the Doraemon games on DS, most companis have screwed up every time someone gets the liscense to do a Doraemon game yet Sega produced 3 really good ones. In fact i wish they did more as i really enjoyed them.

Orta and JSRF are exactly what I meant with "remnants from Dreamcast development" since those started as Dreamcast projects.

Segammy really fucked things up, technically it should have been able to make even more games since the cost of hardware is gigantic compared to software, but even with less costs it managed to do less in 11 years than the original SEGA did in 1!

In just one year, 2000, SEGA made more memorable games than Segammy in 11, how fucking pathetic is that?

Beating SEGA was "fashionable" in the days of the Saturn, but today it gets a lot of respect since most people forgot about the bad moments like the 32X and remembers the Genesis and the Dreamcast.

But the worst part is that segammy is probably going to become another shovelware "social" company, pushing shit games on phones tablets and facebook, so if you thought current segammy games were shit then you are gonna be surprised.

    I'm talking about Shenmueville: f
ecal matter, at said moment, will transcend from abstract theory to a more literal configuration
