Low quality memory cards can cause excessive RF interference in Super Everdrive

It has been a few months since I used my Super Everdrive much, and once I finally got my SNES set up again I went to play some games and was greeted with this:

Waves of interference lines constantly moving across my TV.

For most of the day I thought I might have broken my Super Everdrive somehow, as I am the "if you can't open it you don't own it" type and had removed it from the nice shell provided by Stone Age Gamer several times. I even went so far as to try it on two separate television sets as well as my Super Famicom (which has a video chip that is going bad, it only made it look worse). No change.

Then, I realized that something had changed since I last used my Super Everdrive for more than a few minutes. About two months ago I bought a Killer Instinct cart and had transferred it to that shell with a low profile MMC card. No offense to Stone Age Gamer, I just don't really like the way the Universal shell fits in a North America SNES.

So I popped in the SD card that originally came with my Super Everdrive, and everything is working fine again.

I just thought I would let everyone know in case they ran into this same issue.

I am just left with one question: Does anyone know where I can get a good quality reduced profile / mobile MMC in the States? I spent $12 on this one and it turned out to be quite the dud.

I don't make the universal shells, they are bought. I agree with you they don't fit NA systems as well as a regular NA shell, but we also sell NA shell version. I do find it interesting that you spent $125+ on Deluxe and just completely removed it from that shell kind of defeating the purpose. Probably would have made more sense to send it back and have us put it in NA style shell.

To be honest I never actually considered that as a possibility. This issue came up several months after I bought it. If the video hadn't decided to go bad in my Super Famicom I would be using the Super Everdrive with it instead, but since that's not an option now I have to work with my ugly oxygen-yellowed SNES instead.

I know you don't make the shells, I even commented in another thread on here that they were exactly like the shells on a pirated Super Famicom game. The purpose of this thread was not to diss on the universal shells you provide, they look very nice and fit very well in a SFC (and by extension I would imagine the PAL SNES too) but in the first version of writing the OP, when I thought I might have damaged the board somehow, I would have had to explain why I removed it from the shell so many times.

I wouldn't mind having a separate NA style shell with your nice paint job and label, but I understand how much effort you go to in order to protect your brand and other reasons why you don't/can't sell them separately.

We don't normally send out just shells, but we could have had you send cart back to us and we could have just replaced the shell. It just makes me sad to know that there is a Deluxe/Ultimate Edition out there that was just placed into a different donor cart shell. :(

Well if its something you ever want to do let us know, assuming you still have old shell. You would just have to cover shipping charges.

I had the SNES set up in an area where less "technologically inclined" family members would have access to it, and for their convenience I was leaving the Super Everdrive in the SNES (in the black KI shell). There was more than one occasion where my 2 year old nephew ran into that room and pulled the cart out and threw it around on the (carpeted) floor. I didn't really want that happening when there was a SD card sticking up out of the top of it. Things could get ugly.

Getting back on topic, I suppose there's always the option of cutting a SD card in half, but I really preferred the low profile MMC option because it just was a cleaner solution and didn't require tweezers to remove the card from the slot.

The guts of some SD cards only use about the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the actual card size. If you have one of these it will still function fine.

I know you are joking, but some SD cards actually use a plastic you can see through if you hold up to strong enough light.

I'll have to give that a shot, not terribly keen on modifying any SD card but this might make for a fun trick when friends are drunk.

I did notice the SanDisk 8GB SDHC cards they had in the clearance bin at Walmart said they were "X-ray proof".

i was having the exact same noise problem with my super everdrive using an RS-MMC card, and swapping it out for a standard SD card cleared it up for me as well. Now I'd rather use the MMC card so I won't have to mod my shell, so if anyone knows of any other workarounds for fixes I'd be interested to hear (I'm also looking for an SD card to chop down)

I think this RF interference has nothing to do with the SD Card. I have the F-Zero SNES Cartridge, and when play this way, it will work fine. But when I flash it in my Super Everdrive, even playing without a SD Card inserted, it will show little waves of interference, through A/V out. Nothing that really compromises the experience, but I definitly have this issue.
