How many of you are living in a foreign country?

Something I notice in this forum more than in others that I frequent is the vast amount of immigrants - therefore I was wondering the other day how many of you moved to a foreign country at some point of your live and settled there. This does not include student exchanges or any situation which is certain to end after a few months, but actual life changing decisions.

I gave three options: No, Yes and Yes (+I have to speak a language that's not my native language). So if you moved from England to the US it still counts as yes, but you're not as hardcore as others :p

I immigrated from Germany to Canada myself last August and I'm now living here as a permanent resident with no intention of going back. But since I do not consider Canada my home after such a short time, I consider moving to any country in the world after I hopefully graduate from University in a few years.
<- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

Why not stay in Canada man? I understand you're in BC which I hear is quite expensive, however there are places on the east coast much cheaper.

It's a beautiful place to live, but now that I already left home I don't think I need to settle anytime soon. I feel 'free', heheh... from now on I can go anywhere I want without having to make the big step of "abandoning home", so.. why not :D

I picked option 3. "Yes, I live in a foreign country AND I have to speak a foreign language"

You forgot one option, it's not the case since I'm in Montréal but if I was living in BC I would need the option "No, I live in my home country but I can't speak my native language"

    ;)

Wacky Canadians! Don't most people in Montreal speak English? I thought it was Quebec City where people throw hens and burning wood at you for speaking English.

In the region around Montréal most people can speak English but it's not their native language for the majority.

In remote region of Québec most people don't speak English. In fact I'm native from the Saguenay region and I didn't spoke a single word of English before I moved to Montréal.

This is a myth, people are very friendly all around the province and will try to help even if their English skill are really bad.

Yeah, I was exaggerating :) It's just what I heard from people who are from Quebec, usually all those who are from Montreal can speak perfect English.

I've always live in the US. And up until about 2 years ago, I lived in the same town for 23 years. I haven't traveled much. :/

You missed "I live a nomadic existance" as I tend not to live anywhere for any length of time, although have lived in Japan for for about 2 years in the last 10 years in 1 to 3 month blocks.

This year alone I have been to Japan, England, Wales, Brazil, Finland and Norway.

I'm that option but I consider it somewhat silly since it's not like going from USA to Canada is such a difficult experience (well minus the bit in Montreal where I needed to learn french but I'm now in Toronto).

My wife on the other hand is the 3rd option. She is from mainland china and she only learned English a few years before coming here to study.

How do you manage to keep your stuff when you move around that often? If it was me, it'd be impossible because of the sheer amount of videogames and electronics I own.

I keep a few crates of stuff with me for when I am in the place with my work, else I live from a suitcase with a PS2 slim, GBC and 3DS for company. All my other stuff is in a storage place in a underground car park in central london...
