There's a perfectly rational reason why you could dislike something if it becomes *mainstream*. If we assume music is partially an associated emotional response - if listening to a song that you use to like now reminds you of drunken frat-boys and screaming fan-girls it makes reasonable sense that your old emotions attached to it would change somewhat. You may not necessarily hate it (and you may still appreciate at it) but it can taint your feelings.

I used to troll alot when I was younger.... used to type out pages of "why X sucks" and stuff like that... now people just say overused tag lines and consider it trolling...
I had a field day with that Kony stuff on Facebook. All I had to do was write a few statuses about the kids having a purpose and dying of bullets instead of cholera and the hate started rolling in.

And once it goes mainstream theres no way back, because the mainstream is where the money is: check Apple, it didnt get SHIT when it was just a computer company, but now is the BIGGEST company in the world because the iphone unlike the mac became mainstream

My point is there is no problem with the mainstream as long as the product doesnt changes to accommodate the mainstream rather that the original public.
This is what I would have said if I'd had the right words form out of my hands on my keyboard.

It's not the fact that it becomes mainstream that puts you off something, it's the fact that when it goes mainstream, the market of it has to cater to the lowest common denominator, and it ruins the original idea.

Like anime and video games - which were niche in the 90s down here - but now that they're extremely popular, when you try to buy something anime related, it's all Naruto-Bleach shit, sold by people who don't know shit about Patlabor or Gundam or Cowboy Bebop.

Same thing with retro gaming - In Mexico, it used to be a lot of swapping and great conversations with knowledgeable folks, but now, mostly, it's illiterate hoarders who want your money and don't even know what they're selling.

When things go mainstream, they usually start to water it down to reach an even broader audience. This is why typicaly, when things do go mainstream I start to lose interest.

    IGN, Screw Attack etc.

I left ScrewAttack as soon as Tom was forced out. Shortly after they began sucking every dick possible.

The problem with hating everything that goes mainstream is that EVERYTHING is going mainstream lol.

Reminds me of that South Park episode were theres that dancing contest and theres that group of kids that are nonconformist and one kids like "Im such a nonconformist that Im not conforming to your nonconforming ways" lmao.

I hate it just as much as the next guy when something I like thats kind of always been on the down low goes mainstream but at the sametime its usually only a passing fad and when its over only the true diehards are leftover anyways.

Oh but on a side note I wish somebody would kill Michael Bay lol

I usually will only dislike things that go too mainstream if the quality of whatever it is goes down. But, uh, that doesn't happen very often. haha

Once something became too mainstream, do you dislike that it has become too mainstream or do you dislike how becoming mainstream changed it?

This can be said of many movie directors - they started off with something that was personal, artistic, beautiful and/or original. Then sometimes, after becoming famous, nothing much was left. John Woo made excellent action movies until he went to Hollywood. After that everything turned out to be shit. Then again there are enough examples of artists, bands, brands, that benefitted from their popularity and have gotten better and better because the makers apparently didn't put their heads up their asses. Bands like Metallica and games such as Grand Theft Auto are still amazing even in their most recent appearances despite being incredibly mainstream.
<- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

...what? You have heard the albums they've made in the last 20 years, right?

Well, let me put it this way - I think their 80's albums are amazing, but at the same time 2006's Death Magnetic was really good, too. For me this shows that they are "still good", although everything from 1990 till 2006 was 99% garbage.

Death Magnetic was only good if you compare it to anything else they've made since 1990, it was a pretty bad album otherwise. Plus, they had a lead single that sounded like Nickelback. Metallica is pretty much the best example of something becoming bad because they got mainstream: they became crappy radio rock really quickly.
