Have you ever stopped liking something because it came too mainstream?

Here is a common situation I find myself in.

I used to listen to dubstep for a while as my friend got me into it and I've had history of liking electronica and chiptunes. Anyhow as soon as I heard dubstep on the radio multiple times it's put me off the genre completely and now I hate the stuff.

So has this ever happened to you? Mention your experience.

Only when going mainstream ruins whatever it is I like. And yes, that has happened on occasion. Dubstep as it is now is horrible to my ears. I've heard so many pieces quickly thrown together like today's pop music and auto-tune garbage. But there are a few rare gems in that genre and many people familiar with it tell me it used to be much better in the 90's.

Smartphones I suppose. Been using Palm phones for some time before switching to Android in 2010. With everyone and their mother using them people no longer look at me as oddly as they once did and the best part is that apps don't suck as much anymore or are limited to Palm OS 3 and not usable on 4.5 or WebOS, etc. Android fragmentation isn't anywhere near as bad as Apple fanboys want it to be.

But now that everyone and their mother has one I find myself getting lumped into the category of vocal moron who uses their iPhone for fart noise apps, soundboards and gay detectors (as in an app for 8 year olds to "detect" who is homosexual and who isn't based on a random number generator). Its a damn Samsung Captivate! They make the screens that go into your iDevices! I'd never stop enjoying my device but I'd also never buy an iPhone.

My feedback thread, since it seems somewhat difficult for people to find.

    This.

If you stop liking something purely because it's mainstream - you are a huge douchebag

Or you just put importance on being unique. Or you want to disassociate yourself from all the morons who come into a scene long after you. Or the mainstream status prevents you from succeeding at something competitive.

No. I've grown to hate things that have turned to shit once they became mainstream, but the the fact that they were mainstream was not the reason for the hate. Who cares if something is mainstream or underground? If it's good, then it's good, and if it's crap, then it's crap. That's all there is to it.

If you are worried that your favorite genre of whatever becoming mainstream might negatively impact it's future, then that's understandable. But until it does become shit, just enjoy it like you were before. Don't hate something just for the sake of hating it.

I disagree. You can like something because it's good, regardless of whether it's mainstream or not. However, if it's not mainstream then becomes mainstream, it can get annoying.

Example - I discovered Nickelback long before most people in this country. If I mentioned them to other people, few, if any, would know who they were. I think a friend of mine in the US got me into them. Then they started to be played occasionally on MTV - It would have been Leader of Men. That was in 1996. And then How You Remind Me came out in 2001. And charted. And was played every day on every radio station several times a day. And everyone would go on about this great new band, and how I've just got to listen to them. Umm, well firstly, you have to have your head buried in the sand to have not heard the damn song played by the media. And secondly, they're not new - they formed in the early Nineties and I've been listening to them since 1996. And invariably, I've recommended them to people who obviously ignored me.

So yes, it can be annoying when something you like becomes mainstream.

Of course, it can also mean the way things are done changes. Look at Wayne's World - that was the whole point there. Their homemade show became popular, got bought, and was promptly ruined by doing things the commercial way.

Of course, that can be extremely annoying. It just all depends on what happens after something becomes popular. Does it stay true to it's roots, or does it "streamline" and become something it wasn't? Just look at what happened to the Mass Effect series, and BioWare as a whole.

The series started as a story driven Sci-Fi space opera RPG, with an atmosphere comparable to shows such as Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. But after BioWare was bought by EA, they began to remove RPG elements and the atmosphere that made the series great, and focused on turning it into a mediocre TPS with T&A and explosions (Because that's what fans of Sci-Fi movies want to see, right?).

The fanbase they already had wasn't good enough for them. They wanted more, so they removed things that were "too complicated" for casual gamers, and they dumbed their games down in an attempt to get Call of Duty's fans. I'm not saying this just to dis on CoD. They really said they wanted CoD's audience. The game they were talking about was Dragon Age 2, but it shows the mindset the company has. Link: http://www.nowgamer.com/news/919569/..._audience.html

I know how it feels when something you've been a fan of for years becomes mainstream and turns into something it wasn't for the sake of attracting new fans. With that said, there is a huge difference between hating something that is popular, and hating something because it is popular. In HeXiGON's case, it sounds he is just hating dubstep because it is now popular, not because the quality has declined or is declining. Perhaps he could elaborate further on his reasoning?

That's the thing, sometimes when something becomes mainstream there are chances of it becoming worse cause of it's strong popularity.

The music was even being used in kid's commercials for toys and cereals, I guess that's what really bothered me. Not just because it was mainstream.

Sorry, I wasn't all together when I posted this topic :/

I definitely have a tendency for liking more obscure stuff, but I don't limit myself to that. I like plenty of mainstream stuff too. I don't immediately reject something because it's mainstream, but it's a general trend that I'm not too interested in modern, mainstream culture.

Music becoming too mainstream has sometimes put me off bands due to their fan base becoming filled with w*nkers.
I take all Shenmue 3 rumors with a grain of salt...bigger than Lan Di's ego

people still use it properly in this day and age... I do myself...

anyway for me its trolling (Trawling)... Trolling is more than saying some retarded crap like "Good story bro"... hell in my days trolling required something in which most people today lack... that something being intelligence...

I used to troll alot when I was younger.... used to type out pages of "why X sucks" and stuff like that... now people just say overused tag lines and consider it trolling...

Nah, just because its popular doesnt means its bad, the problem is that more often than not when a product goes mainstream it has to work for EVERYBODY so the original awesome formula gets diluted and dumbed down for the general public

See FPS games, RTS, RPGs, etc.... games like COD are one generation away from being QTE games because dumbasses cant play for shit.

And once it goes mainstream theres no way back, because the mainstream is where the money is: check Apple, it didnt get SHIT when it was just a computer company, but now is the BIGGEST company in the world because the iphone unlike the mac became mainstream

My point is there is no problem with the mainstream as long as the product doesnt changes to accommodate the mainstream rather that the original public.

I liked Napoleon Dynamite the first time I saw it in theaters. But then through all the merchandising and Hot Topic, I've grown to dislike it quite a bit. I can still watch the movie but if I see shirts and crap, I can't stand it.
