    Rare Famicom Soft

    Since the old thread got closed for whatever stupid reason (yes sorry, but I don't think value discussion is a reason to close a thread in a forum called "Rare [...] Video Gaming"...), I open up a new one.

    In order to please the Gods, please refrain from inquiries about the value of games you want to sell.

    With over 1000 cartridges and 200 disks, the Famicom library offered an incredibly wide variety of software in an era that now lies more than two decades behind. Naturally some games emerged as particularly rare and obscure releases. These can be discussed here... RARE & UNKNOWN games, not stuff like Recca or Gimmick. These are rare but known, and therefore way easier to get your hands on than on a copy of Charumera Zelda.

    I was wondering if these shockbox-rereleases by Namco are all that have been released.

    They tend to go for lots of money and are quite rare. Is this a complete collection of rereleases or are there more?
    <- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

    Yeah, I was only referring to rereleased games. All Namco games were distributed in plastic cases starting from 1986 or so, but some of the early "small box-games" from before that were then reissued in plastic cases, probably in low print runs.

    @juste
    The picture is taken from a yahoo auction (bin 45000yen), but surprisingly nobody bought it yet. These games can seperatwly reach up to 5digit prices:/

    I am ONLY talking about rereleases, if you find shockbox Pac-Man or Galaga for 100yen please buy me 10 copies each :P

    I know that these were standard cases for Namco games. I have about 20 shockbox games myself... the ones I want to know more about were initially released as small box games (18 in total) and looked like this:

    But have been reissued as shockbox games later, not sure when exactly.

    But I believe there have not been more than those five that can be seen in the top post. I found this picture the other day:

    (Namco Masterpiece Series - Vol. 1)

    Guess there just never was a vol. 2.

    Can you please tell me a bit more about the term "shockbox"? Is this the official name? If so I don't see why.

    I have seen the Pac-Man game in an online shop for around 29 euro I remember. Is this a good price?

    Speaking of rare Famicom games I think the most mysterious ones are Godzilla Extra Playing version and Uranoid II. All I ever saw from Godzilla is a single picture of the box. I never saw one for sale or found any other info about it. And Uranoid II is still unconfirmed and therefore the holy grail among all releases imo if it really exists.

    The rarest game btw is the golden Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match cart. While poeple claimed 8 carts were produced actually each contains a different software version which in fact makes every single one of these a unique release so each can be considered the rarest official release ever - not only for the famicom.

    Shock Box is just some name made p by someone on the net. Probably some Neo Geo fan since that's where I first heard it used. The cases have no real name at all just like Mega Drive or Master System cases. They're just plastic cases.

    As a fan of both Famicom and Kinnikuman, I would like to know more about these carts. How do the eight games differ from each other? I Googled the game and read from a completely unreliable source that they were only given to winners of tournaments, so I assume that the carts just say which tournament they were won from..?

    There were more releases in those shockbox cases. Here's some pictures from a friend's retrogameshop here in Rio:

    PS: Some of these are sold already.

    But 8 gold cassettes for Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match were made. I think also just because each contain a different character doesn't mean each should be classed as separate pieces. Even if so, I think for many items exist only one copy, so why should they not be classed as the rarest offical release ever instead?

    Wow Johnny most of these games are Namco 163 based which means they have an quite nice sound chip on them. :thumbsup:

    I just got a bunch of these coming my way, Including Erika to Satoru yume Bokuen (which is one of these series of plastic case games from Namco)

    My carts are all loose though. D:

    And they were bought on "Mercado Livre" for very low prices lol :lol:

    Well, it's been very difficult to find stuff on MercadoLivre for low prices, so congrats =]

    Post pics when you receive them.

    Oh, Yakumo is right, I just made that up on the spot. I don't know what to call them and 'plastic case' sounds a bit silly I think. There were so many different kinds of packagings for the Famicom, but Namco was pretty consistent with their so I randomly assigned it a name.

    I have seen the Pac-Man game in an online shop for around 29 euro I remember. Is this a good price?
    I would think so. I can't say I have seen Pac-Man for sale in a separate auction, but I have seen Dig Dug and Galaga and they sold for 10'000yen+ each.

    The rarest game btw is the golden Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match cart. There are a couple of one-of-a-kind versions, like the Rockman 4 gold carts or YamYam for the Super Famicom. But I believe it is impossible to obtain a complete collection. Maybe one of them had already been destroyed or the owners just simply won't sell them, not even for $20,000.

    @Johnny
    It has already been said several times, but this is not what I'm talking about! :P I am not the biggest Famicom expert on the planet, but I do know that Namco produced dozens of plastic case-games. I own several of those on the pictures myself.

    What I was asking for was information on SPECIFIC plastic case rereleases of games that were formerly released in small cardboard boxes.
    <- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

    I see. Since i don't know much about Famicom releases / rereleases, i posted those pics. Have no idea if they are rereleases or not. Just wanted to contribute to the discussion somehow.
