I don't take it personally and you are right - there is no bush :)

I also know it probably reads like "OMG HES SO AWESOME, YOU ARE ALL SO WRONG - BUT I CANT SAY WHY". Which I am sure we have all seen that type of things many many times and usually its complete nonsense and said when someone has no proof.

This is why I do not care if you believe me - I can not prove anything without disrespecting his privacy/secrecy. However, I had to have my say.

But, I do respect his work and his privacy. But it's just hard to not reply when people are criticising when its based purely on other peoples criticism and I know differently.

Why I support him should be obvious - he has skill, as proven by the leak. Its not about being morally questionable - he does not want people leaking information. Its quite a clear cut line. I probably shouldnt even have said anything in the first place - but as mentioned above, its hard to not reply.

He is more than capable of releasing some great tools (again, prove by this leak). But he does not want them public - which is his choice.

Chances are you already have and don't even know about it. Especially if you own a psp.

I am a strong believer that if someone trusts you with information and asks you not to spread it, you should honour that.

Its exactly how I would want people I trusted to act. If that means I am thought less of then so be it.

But I wouldn't call myself a "loyal follower" at all. I am just a man of my word - even if its someone I have little contact with any more.

    In short:
I was asked to join a private IRC channel by a mutual friend of mathieulh and I, to try and get me interested on the PS3. I hung around there for some time, but never really got interested with the PS3. All of what I have said is related to my time in that channel.

I wouldn't class mathieulh as a friend (nor would he of me) or a "subject" of his, but I do respect the privacy asked of me.

I am only human, all the FUD I have read was just overwhelming. (not necessarily here, but here was the breaking point)

I did say I shouldn't have said anything, unfortunately it is too late now.

I had thought people here were of a "higher class" than the people who visit the "PS3 hacking" sites and wouldn't blindly follow the hating crowd, which is probably why I tried to set the record straight a little.

    Mistakes made, life continues, etc.

I am around to your thought pattern - roles reversed I would be saying the same/similar. That's why I do not take it personally and also know that it was a mistake to open my mouth.

Unfortunately, its not always easy to keep your mouth shut when you read the nonsense that gets spread around. Moments of weakness, etc.

What I don't understand is why these 'top end hakkerz' have to worry about being sued in the first place. If they really ARE creating tools for the betterment and furthering of a scene why can't they do it anonymously? And the simple answer is because they feel the need to boast and brag. There aint no kudos or dick waving if your name's not known, is there?

''Look at me, I've got such and such up and running but you've not because you're not one of us''

As an outsider looking in, the PlayStation 3 scene is the most childish and inclusive bunch of nerds and geeks on the planet. If you have something to share then share it, if you want to keep it for yourself simply keep your fucking mouth shut and don't start moaning that everybody outside of your self necrotizing clique is just a whining, bitching leech who should stop moaning and begging and be grateful for the few crumbs that are thrown their way.

The Microsoft and Nintendo scenes are nothing like this, everything is open and shared and all information is there for anyone to see and be used yet not for the PS3. So why is this? It's nothing to do with lawsuits as Nintendo are renowned the world over as being probably the most litigious of all the console manufacturers yet it hasn't stopped anybody from publicly showing their workarounds and exploits has it? Already the new v2.2.0-4 update for 3DS has been cracked so that DS flashcards continue to work and whole teams of people worked tirelessly in the 360 scene on creating progs so that XGD3 discs could be ripped properly and burnt back to DVD9 with no issue as well as patching them for Xbox Live!.

And what does the PS3 scene do? Screams blue murder because a hacked EBOOT that would have probably never been released had it not been leaked made its way into the wild. Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. If there was more openness then all the animosity that is felt for people like mathieulh would dissipate almost immediately, outsiders would know what was what and more people would be able to dev and code and participate like they can with every other 'scene' out there, but then it wouldn't be special would it? There'd be no one-upmanship and no self appointed, self righteous 'guardians' of the PS3's secrets. Most importantly of all there would be no hierarchy and then the chosen few wouldn't be special anymore would they? They'd be just like me and you.

    Perish the thought...

Nintendo scene is actually the best I've ever seen.

Nintendo and Microsoft approach things very differently to Sony.

Sony has sued individual developers, the others have not.

graf_chokolo is still on going last I checked and they sued him for 1 million.

Geohot got dropped, but after expense that he only covered due to the media attention.

    Edit:

Just a disclaimer -I am not involved in the PS3 scene in ANY way, despite the above defence of mathieulh.

Is there any reason why Nintendo and Microsoft haven't made the move?

You mean sue hackers? I would imagine it's because they don't need to. Even when the 360/wii/ds was hacked, they were still making money. Unfortunately this gen, Sony has been the king of making stupid decisions, and selling a $600 console for a loss is definitely one of them. They were already in the red, and having an exploit released made them panic. Remember when geohot claimed to have found an exploit in OtherOS, and instead of patching the exploit like a good company would, they just removed it from everyone instead?

That's why I'm not looking forward to the future of gaming. Day 1 DLC, removing content to make more overpriced DLC, multi-player compromising the single-player experience, games becoming streamlined and dumbed down, and having content I already own being removed whenever companies feel like it. I was amazed at how many people were OK with Sony removing OtherOS simply because they didn't use it. I admit I didn't use it much, but when I purchase a $600 PS3, I expect it to do what is advertised, not have a key feature that interested me get removed because Sony got scared.

Also, I agree with Consumed. No offense to anyone personally, but the PS3 scene as a whole is one of the worst I've ever seen. Shame too, since the PSP scene was one of the best.

Yeah that's what I meant, that's true. It's not like people don't buy Playstation 3 games although they're sometimes expensive.

Sony got scared mainly because they didn't want the Playstation 3 to fail much like the PSP did. I used to see PSP games for around $10-$20 in stores mainly because the firmware hacks. SONY should just learn not to overprice their stupid hardware with bad quality, I've never really had a good experience with SONY products.

to those wondering what this exploit actually dose

in a nut shell it allows the dumping of the boot loader known as lvl0
think of it as the bios except it CANT be updated without hardware revisions much like newer PS2's came with newer bios

ok the boot loader can be dumped
it also allows dumping of the per console PRIVATE key the keys to the kingdom so to speak

and a buffer overflow was also found in the boot loader that allows
the boot loader to be overwritten in memory with your own code
also it allows loading of multipliable boot loaders at once
    think multi boot firmware

I'm curious (and sorry if this has already been explained, I haven't read the whole thread or the links) how was mathieulh's work leaked? Did someone hack into his computer or something? Been wondering about that since the whole thing happened, I honestly dont see how someone could have taken information like this from an individual.

mathieulh gave the exploit to a group of developers he thought he could trust
so that the developers could perfect and make use of the exploit for end users

but one of the developers wanted his e-peen longer so he leaked the exploit

Loooooong story short, nobody knows. Truth be told, nobody knows. When all said and done, nobody ACTUALLY knows or can say. A trusted associate of his confirms that nobody knows. Nobody in this equation can say anything that means anything to anybody because if they do, well let's just say that they know that nobody knows anything really. They were all looking the other way when "the hack" took place and/or was released.

Can you see any kind of pattern forming here?

Was any work leaked? Was any original work leaked? Guess what, nobody can apparently say anything.

Hey, I mean this all somehow happened to coincide with the week that I cracked the 3.73 encryption. I think maybe somehow they got hold of my work and published it, claiming credit for themselves. However there's nothing I can do because nobody knows anything...

Should I release a tid bit to someone so that they'll spread some sort of word?

    Shit! Really??

    Where did you hear that??

Oh, from one friend to another, using phrases like "mathieulh gave the exploit" and "he thought he could trust" would massively land him in shit in court. So I'd reword that story to something like this:

Nobody gave the exploit to a group of developers someone thought they could trust so that the developers could perfect and make use of the exploit for end users

But one of the developers never heard of Mathieulh, and in an unrelated decision decided to commit suicide just in case he may or may not have known anything.
I know what you're thinking, wow.....that's hardcore. But I can tell you that every single one of us hackers are hardcore. We don't often remember things like creating hacks, but when we do remember stuff, you best believe we remember it hard, like Vietnam flashback hard!
