The CELL (PS3 chip) will be reveladed today.See first pics.

The CELLl, that will equip the Playstation 3, will probably be the biggest attraction on a Technology conference that happens today in San Francisco. The chip developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba, will be shown to the public for the first time.

The expectation of the specialists is that the CELL will be a revolution on microprocessors. It's processing power is 10 times faster than the actual chips generation, and according to Sony, will aproximate the quality of the graphics in games to the special effects on movies.

Wow, I never figured it would be that small, considering the amount of logic they threw in. And it's a very interesting design, imho.

    Hahaha.
Just to keep in mind that a decent movie effect (like jurasic park) not require 10*3ghz cpu to do it in real time but a (at least) 1000*3ghz cpu.
I can't bear to see this sort of "commercial" wrong announcements that means nothing.

Exept that, seems a cool new technology... Impressive :smt023

didn't they said the same thing for the ps2? :smt042

    ...funny but true.
"(...)A One World Government and one-unit monetary system, under permanent non-elected hereditary oligarchists who self-select from among their numbers in the form of a feudal system as it was in the Middle Ages. In this One World entity, population will be limited by restrictions on the number of children per family, diseases, wars, famines, until 1 billion people who are useful to the ruling class, in areas which will be strictly and clearly defined, remain as the total world population." Dont let media feed you with lies. open your eyes and search information yourself.

Nintendo said it with the Ultra 64. I wouldn't put too much stock in Sony's claims until I see screenshots. It is rather impressive how they got it that small, however (I know shit about processors, so that'll probably end up sounding stupid :-) ).

the hardware design is typical for sony. nearly as hard to program as an average piece of concrete or rock. but i am really looking forward to getting my hands on it... sounds like a lot of "fun" if you are in an SM state of mind or something.

in reality on the one hand it will be quite hard to master, but on the other one it will have LOTS of power and still be cheap to produce, which is good.

I agree to whatever. hold up... wait a minute!

Well that isnt stupid at all... mind you this processor (CPU is not really the right word) actually contains 8 cores, connected with some bitchin' fast interconnect, plus embedded memory (how much per core I dont remember, I think it was 128kbyte). That is quite amazing, especially if Paulo's claims about speed and power dissipation are right.

Ah, thanks. I feel slightly smarter now :-).

Great avatar, by the way :smt043 .

Do they mean the quality found in movies like Toy Story or Shrek2? Here we go again.

What will last longer, the PS3 on day of US release or those chocolate drops in a room full of hungry 5 year olds?

Is it really a chip, loooks like a piece of blue plastic to me, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are doing the vapourware early this year...

It's still going to take a large group of very talented developers to get something like FF spirits out of the system. I'm just hoping that all that power isn't going to be wasted on more crappy movie license titles, unfortunately, they sell. I'm counting on Namco, Konami and Square-Enix to really make the PS3 shine.

One of the stories mentioned a prototype workstation based on the cell processor, anyone seen any pics of this? I remember they build a rendering workstation with parallel Emotion Engine chips back when the ps2 was being announced and nothing ever came of that one.

uhm when jurassic park was created they used sgi systems in a renderfarm and sgi was and if iam not wrong not is even today not able to produce 3ghz cpus (for jp i think they were around 200-300mhz max.)
but sgi is working with mips technology which was at that time (early 90s) superiour against the normal x86 pcs, but they lost track and today they are not really interested into normal workstations and more concentrating to huge projects for military or car industry

With the tiny amount of memory I doubt it'll do much ..

They really need to put 256 or 512 into the ps3

these little chips are going to revolutionize electronic devices.. Those things are 10x more powerfull than the fastest pentium 4, and they dont even get hot, therefore they dont require massive cooling contraptions.. Soon, almost every electronic device will use a cell processor.. Computer processors will become irrelevant. And as tome goes on and they become cheaper to manufacture, even everyday alarmclocks and wrist watches will have them.
