Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I would probably suggest to do the same if I was in Apple's business strategy department.
What about the Xbox 360. Do you hate the 360 and Microsoft because MS doesn't like you to modify your console to play backups?

A company limitting its customers' freedom about what they can do with a particular product is not new and by no means exclusive to Apple. It's common practice, virtually anywhere. If you don't like that, use Linux and build your own computer. If you want to jailbreak devices, it's your own responsibility to do so but I would never except companies like Sony (PSP) or Apple to encourage me doing this.
    That's Apple and Oranges :fresh:

I hacked my iPhone for the reason of changing my ringtone easier. Not paying 99c for a song I already have paid for.

Philips have brought us products that have changed our lives, as have Ford, IBM, Kellogg's, Hershey and a thousand and one other manufacturers, Apple are just sellers of snake oil.

What makes me laugh most is when people say that before the introduction of iphones and smartphones etc mobile technology was shit (ave made this point along with one or two others). Up until a few years ago mobile phones did exactly what they were meant to do, receive and make calls and send the odd text message. What more does it need to do? Nothing. Everything else that has been added over the years is unnecessary frippery that's been foisted upon us by these supposed ''visionaries'' who know better than us simple proles what we need in life and when.

If there's ever a moment in time when you need a camera, a GPRS system, a games console, an e-book reader, a facility to send and receive e-mail, a calendar, a calculator, a web browser, an mp3 player, a video library and whatever other crappy 'Apps' you have on your phone all at exactly the same time then there's something seriously wrong with the way you're living your life.

Well, I respect the amount of discipline he seemed to bring to the company. It was floundering close to bankruptcy mid 90s and was pretty much a redundant company. Jobs returned, removed their poor product lines, created simple product line ups and brought the company to immense profitability.

    From this

    to this

I dearly wish that PC manufacturers would follow Apple's example- small product lines (at least for consumers), no crapware preinstalled, and a genuine care for the experience the customer has with the product. From the second you get the box in your hand, your are experiencing the product. The packaging, the entire feel of the product beats the shit out of other brands. Buy an Acer, Toshiba, or even Lenovo (as I have) and the boxes are boring, brown, tarnished in labels. As is the system with craplets- they shit all over the Windows installation and ruin the hardware with labels.

Oh, and their design. You cannot deny that their design is downright beautiful. Such care and attention to the usability of their products I have nothing but admiration for. Example- I hated iPods and their limitations and preached against Apple. After I had tried 5 or 4 Creative Zens, each with issues, problems, and faults, I tried an iPod. And the damn thing just worked.

Sure, whatever, their products may not have expandable memory or allow fine tinkering of the OS or have 18 different inputs. It lacks in some respects, I get that. They aren't for geeks. Buy something else if you feel that way. But you have to respect that they have brought technology and simplicity into the hands of people who are usually averse to it.

I respect him for fostering this kind of care and attention to their products, and being such an obviously brilliant businessman. They believe in their products. I see no other company's CEO on the stage with such an obvious lust for their products, aiming to break away from the same old same old to innovate and make things better. He provided the face of an era.

..and no, I'm not a ravenous fanboy. I have only ever own 3 Apple products (Shuffle, Nano, now Touch), and sure, I do see fault with some of their attitudes and ways (can't deal with the mouse acceleration on Macs for example, nor do I like when people see him as a prophet or sorts) but I can respect and admire what he and his company represent.

Specially due to the fact that I know first hand what it's like to see a loved one loose the battle to liver cancer. (Jobs had pancreatic cancer and lived for a LONG time, which is remarkable because pancreatic cancer is one of the most resilient and deadly forms of cancer in existance).

What I don't agree with, however, is the position people put themselves in saying how horrible it is that he's died and how untimely his death was, etc. Just because he had money and was the leader of a big company doesn't make him more important than say my father or a dying man in Africa. That was my point, we all die, all this fuzz about his death is just because he was the leader of Apple. Had he been an anonymous engineer working for Apple, we wouldn't even know he died.

For all we know, nobody made a big fuzz when the iPhone factory workers committed suicide last year due to inhuman labor conditions, and correct me if I am wrong, but Apple made no statement regarding that. And if you ask me, Jobs might have had a great mind for marketing the products and making them unique with his ideas, but without the people working for the company, putting their efford into their jobs Apple would be nothing today.

Thank you Wolvie... I really appreciate this... It's a great ego booster ;-)

I admit I'm a little bit crazy sometimes.. people don't usually get me, or where I'm coming from mainly because they don't know my story.
I thank you for the support you gave me back when I first entered the forums and I was really troubled with my dad's death. It was nice of you to take the time to answer my messages. So again, Thanks!

Thankfully, I have the greatest boyfriend I could ask for. Tchoin is indeed wonderful, the best man I've ever met by far.

And that's enough offtopicness for the moment.

Yeah, this will be my last off topic (in this topic) message too.

Tchoin: don't see me as a threat, I live by a code, that says. Do not steal other peoples girl friends.

I didn't like Steve Jobs too much because I've always hated Apple, but I was saddened to hear of his tragic and early death.

Between him, Gates, and their staffs pioneering in the 70s, we've received a world with technological solutions to so many old problems. That's something that you can't disrespect.

It's sad, even more when you stop to think he wasn't that old and it was because a terrible disease.

Honestly, liking him or not, you can't deny he influenced many of today's technology.

    RIP Steve.

lol what the maps alone made iFone worth getting when it came out. Some of us don't have the benefit of living in cities where streets are named.

    Others:
-Many fold better Pop client than any other Japanese phone on the market when the 3G hit (and yes, the Japanese ones were leaps and bounds above the competition offered by whitey).
-Play your fucking music w/ no bullshit. God damn, how did every other phone up to the iPhone suck cock so miserably at this? At least all the ones I saw.
-Didn't base it's apps around Java. Again, punch the Japanese in the cocks for this, but they were leading the pack at the time.

Christ, well I must be doing something wrong then!

I use my iPhone (the first Apple device I ever owned, incidentally) for eBay, internet, email, sat nav, camera, mp3 player and calculator ALL THE BLOODY TIME!

One of my 3 year-old Twins put my 3GS in the paddling pool in the summer, and it was like someone cut my arm off! I have to admit that I am totally reliant on having the thing about these days (not a fact I am proud of).

I do however, often use the 'you only need a mobile to make calls' arguement with my 16 year-old Stepson, when he is banging on about the latest Blackberry!

God damn, it looks we have pissed off quite a few Apple fan boys. Hell, is there not a forum some where else ? where they can mourn their great "hero" ? I liked Apple before it went to all the CRAP they made. Yeah, I call all the "I products" for "Why Products". And I have thankfully none of them. Apple sued some people for making a better and faster clone of one of their machines, but none of the Crapple fan boys mentions that, cause then they will argue. That Crapple has all the right to do so, when Crapple sold a shitty "real" mac. Yeah, it is sad that some person named Steve Jobs died of cancer, but if any one with a bloody heart and soul has lost some one they cared and loved deeply about to cancer. Then they fucking know it hurts, cause cancer is a fucking killer, and some of those who survive it, will have personality changes. And I am not joking. So to all the Crapple fan boys, and those who think some of us members are cold. Well go tell it to the mountains for all I care. Cry rivers of snot, I really do not give a rats ass. But to the human person, who was a human being with his odds and ends, named Steve Jobs. Rest In Peace.

Hipsters are usually not idiots but well educated. I am no hipster by the way and I find their elitist attitude amusing sometimes, but in the end I'd rather hang out with a hipster than a college football player.

And I don't know about you guys, but anyone who has ever been to a university lecture should know that Macbooks/iPhones/iPads are far from being exclusive to hipsters and snobs. Literally every second computer I see is a Macbook. When I enter one particular computer-based class, I see at least 40 glowing Apple logos and they are owned by all kinds of people.
It's not a French Cinema class but a Commerce one btw Lol.

Come on guys. Let's keep it clean and on topic. I have better things to do than clean up a thread that I have no interest in reading.

Oh, and just to back up GaijinPunch, japanese phones before the iPhone were years ahead of the shit available in the west. They had GPS, better cameras than iphone, arcade games, played music, played video, had analouge and digital TV and more. These days the western smart phone is better though.

Same here. All my ebay sales/Sat-Nav/Email/quick cam are done on my phone. It saves me carrying a bundle of other tech around. People who criticize other people for this are either cretins or uninformed simpletons. Its what ever suits you best, I don't badger you to use more tech.
I use iPhone because its the best all round package. Android pre-ginerbread was unsuitable. Likewise nor was anything pre 3GS.
Coming to an App store near to you soon! or not as the case may be.

What kind I say? nobody gave a shit when Jef Raskin died and he invented the fucking Mac

Pretty much every apple product from 1998 has been created by Jon Ive and his team

Jobs was a salesman, he wasn't an engineer nor a designer

I feel bad for his kids, then again everyone knows he left her first daughter to starve for years because he wouldn't recognize her.

But thats no surprise given how famous he was for treating everyone at apple like shit

Specially in the 80s, which is why they fired his ass

Anyway, I wonder whos gonna replace him as chief marketer given than the current CEO Cooks sucks ass at showing stuff on stage
