    Community Dump: Xbox Alpha Games

People seem to have forgotten that I was going to do this, so a new thread won't hurt anything. Its been okayed by everyone needed. Right now, 80$ is needed, which will lead to the Simpsons Road Rage e3 build, and Dark Summit to be uploaded. AI the Circuit will follow if this is successful. Paypal information is at the bottom of this post. The original text is below :

Note : This has been cleared with Assembler.

As some of you have seen, my Alpha kit is currently for sale in the marketplace. Having just graduated from University, and needing some cash for both photography and to move on in life, I put it up for sale. I realize that the unit is huge, and at the end of the day, what most people want is for the games themselves to be preserved.

This thread is to gather interest in a community dump of these games. These games are untouched, apart from dates due to the transferring of files.

A.I. the Circuit is an unreleased game that, apart from small mention in an article by "Surfer Girl" I believe it was, nothing else on the Internet exists about this game. It is playable, with at least two players. One character has a tendancy to crash the game, and it is clearly unfinished, but it works. This game in particular has some debug text files that I haven't played with due to me not wanting to break anything.

The Simpsons Road Rage is an e3 build that allows for some demoing of the game, and of course is playable.

Dark Summit has to executables, one of which works. The game will still crash from time to time, and also isn't complete, but again is playable.

The issue most of you will have is the fact that there aren't a lot of Alpha kits out there, and issue that is unfortunately being seen with the 64DD dumps going on. And there is no way around that, unfortunately. But what may interest those of you without a kit is a set of seemingly-windows EXE files included in Dark Summit. This starts a window up, but unfortunately is missing libraries of some sort, and thus the game doesn't load. I dont know if this could work with the libraries, or if it would help at all in an emulator, but it is something that, to me, could be interesting for those with more knowledge than myself.

Now, of course, there is the issue of money, the thing that no one likes to talk about. I know this is no Sonic Xtreme, or Halo, or anything of that nature, but the fact remains that very little is out there in regard to Alpha kits. I know a few people with various games, one of which had Dark Summit and e3, but I was never able to confirm whether or not they were the same builds.

Regardless, I, at the very least, want some software to get out there to you guys with kits but no games. For that reason, I am pricing the Simpsons and Dark Summit, both together, at 400$ even. All I ask is that with any donations that would come, is the fee gets paid or it doesn't go to the total.

For A.I. the Circuit, I would be asking quite a bit more. The game is unreleased, after all. For this, I would want 900$. I realize this is a lot, but it is honestly what I feel it is worth, or, at the very least, worth to me. If this goal can be reached, Ill also throw in a utility called p3dview, which I assume views certain files but never really played with.

I'll start things off with $10.

Though it seems PayPal is really clamping down on gift payments and wanted me to pay a fee. An eCheck will have to do.

My feedback thread, since it seems somewhat difficult for people to find.

I'm debating whether to donate to this one. Nothing against you personally Borman and I will probably be happy to support future releases by you as well as others and I totally understand your current fiscal position, but there is an issue which bothers me which I hope you will not mind me discussing. My intention is not to thread crap or to inhibit this fundraiser in any way.

Community dumps or protos held for ransom is a grey area already up for debate in of itself but for me even amongst the mess there are some distinctions.

One for example is that people may go out of their way to obtain the software, which may cost several hundred to purchase the media and several hundred on equipment and time to dump. It is not entirely fine that the dumper should get a proto original for free but it is fair that due to depreciation and effort it is nice for some recumpence. It is partly because of this that when I dumped Deuce, I only did so for half of the cost of the software and when the disc was sold, it went for the remaining half.

On the other hand however when people buy hardware they pay for the hardware. Any software which comes installed with it is merely a bonus and many people rightly share it freely as it was the hardware they paid for. Selling the software someone got as a bonus for buying the hardware is a bit morally suspect IMO. Back in 2004 when I had 3 unreleased games on my Dreamcast 5.24 I didn't ransom them, but I also didn't share them publicly. You could argue that is my perogative, as is your charging for your lucky find is yours which is fine but it doesn't make it seem more right than my actions, in fact it makes it seem a little more wrong.

With all out of the way unfortunately I doubt you will reach your projected target as you will find many dumps struggle and your particular circumstances probably won't help. I even struggled to get $100 for Deuce and anything of substance for the $700 I spent on Geist Force. I think the only reason the second disc fundraiser for the site to own monkfish's copy went so well was because the community got screwed out of their chance on the first disc given that ir arrived damaged and people figured shit we may never get the chance again. I do however want to see your fundraiser to succeed but as said I do have my reservations about you ever reaching your current goals and my own willingness to donate.

Perhaps given time I may chip some in but you will have to catch me in a better mood! Anyhow I wish you the best of luck and I hope this does not come between us.

    Regards,

I understand the concern, but at the same time, nothing is free. I bought the system primarily for the software, as it actually worked which most dont, plus the hardware is in awful condition. Could I sell it for a few hundred? Probably, just because of it's rarity. But most wouldn't want it in their collection. At the same time, people buy things for cheap, and sell them for more in everyday life. And the fact is, the economy is hard, I can't afford to give away anything of value for free. I have 30,000$ in debt coming due soon, and a possibly 30k more in the next two years, every dollar that allows me to get by easier helps. I've always offered to sell the Alpha kit. If someone wants to be a good person, buy it and and release it for free, then more power to them. But I can't afford that. $400 for two games is more than fair, when one is a popular license, and both run on Alpha kits, which are few and far between without software. I've released many games in the past, for free, as I was financially able to, but I just can't afford that now.

Backing up this software wasn't easy either. For one, when I received the hardware, the CPU was flopping around inside the system. I needed to obtain a USB adapter to get a controller to work, I searched for hours for the correct Alpha SDK that someone was kind enough to send to me (which barely worked), I had to obtain the correct Visual Studio software as the SDK wouldn't install without it, I had to buy a Windows XP compatible machine, and I had to spend many hours getting the right updates installed that didn't inhibit the software from working. It wasn't easy, but it was doable.

I have no problems with waiting for the funds. I don't expect an instant 400$ in my inbox, but at the same time, when 10 or 15$ comes in, you'd be surprised at how much that helps. I have it backed up relatively securely, or as much as one person can. And, to be honest, I'd much rather this have been in a private message, but I understand your point. At the end of the day, this software is just as unique as Geist Force is, but it runs on hardware that makes it that much more rare, especially working (and it is a holy grail of many collectors. Considering these units were meant to be destroyed, its a miracle any exist.

Much thanks to CodeAsm though, updating the status of the fundraiser shortly. That 15$ will get me gas, or food, so its always appreciated.

Like I said I know your money situation, we are all in this situation but some worse than others ;)

Anyhow to put it blunty I doubt the games will work on my Xbox DVT4 nor do I care about the particular titles mentioned in any shape or form whatsoever plus I still have my reservations but I decided to donate $10 regardless, as I suspect you may do the same for me - so consider it more of an investment in you than the games themselves ;)

The $10 should be on its way to you as we speak. Enjoy!

Much appreciated. Everyone is allowed their apprehensions, that's life heh. Consider it this way, in terms of Dreamcast stuff, look at it as games that would be compatible with the Set 2 development cards. Rare as can be, regardless of the titles. I donate to anything and everything that I possibly can (including Deuce :P), so it is nice when others give back :) Thanks to everyone so far!

What is the set time period for reaching the goal? I think you need one as per the fundraising rules.

    Ah OK. ^_^

I just thought a different member got into trouble a little bit for not changing thread details after a rule change (or something like that).

But not to worry. Good luck!
