In my setup official one did it too.(I know I wrote it before :))
Nintendo Scart cable is using 1 ground for both video+audio. Normally in a Scart spec, r+g+b lines have their own ground pins, same for audio l+r.
So I think if you want the best sound from that console wire the audio signals and their ground separately and mount 2 RCA jacks, and use a high quality cable for it.

    I'm hopeless with a soldering iron :(

PS I don't even have one

Oh, or else I could get an RGB/Scart cable which already has phonos on it? I've seen some for sale.

Same thing. Third party cables suck. Once upon a time Monster manufactured some cables, but they are S-video. This noise thing maybe hardware related also, someone should give it a try... I no longer play with SNES, I sold it. I prefer playing it on XBOX (emulation). SNES controller can be converted for it.

I have now tested my RGB/Scart cables on a Sony CRT. One of them still has loads of noise (and picture is crap), the other has a perfect picture and nearly no audio noise. I think I will stick to this one.

Best solution is to wire yourself a console to female scart cable that is as short as possible, and connect from that to your TV with some properly shielded, thicker (often very expensive) scart cables.
