Chipped Xbox 1/DVD drive problems.

I bought a modded Xbox 1 cheaply, but the DVD drive doesn't eject. Can I replace the DVD drive with any other IDE drive? The mod chip is an Aladdin XT Plus2, as sold here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums...ad.php?t=27253

Alternatively is there a way to fix the drive? I've cleaned and oiled inside, but no joy. From what I can tell it might be the power of the tray motor - I saw mention of using metal on a magnet in the mechanism to weaken it, but the description was too poorly worded to follow. The drive is a Toshiba Samsung one.

I see that it has XBMC on the hdd. The console just boots as normal though, would it usually do that, or do you need to hold down some buttons?

As you can probably tell I know nothing about Xbox modding.

only a certain type of PC DVD works, but you can take any Xbox DVD drive as there are no key limitations.
Where are you located? I am looking to throw quite a lot of Xbox stuff out the next weeks, I am sure I have a DVD left I dont need.

You can use any pc ide dvd rom but it will only read backup discs and not originals.

If you press the eject button and it makes a slight "ka-dunk" sound and the tray moves a bit (talking mm's here) and then back again it is the belt. 22 x 1.4 belt is the key. Before purchasing a belt though, you can try and clean yours. Also don't use oil, go down to your local hobby shop and grab some tamiya ceramic grease. Also another thing to clean on the Samsung drive is the worm drive. Take the bottom plate off and you will see a clear/white plastic plate that has a plastic toothed piece with a spring behind it. It has one phillips screw holding it on. Remove this and clean this and the wormdrive and re-lube with the ceramic grease. Just remember a little but goes a long way.

A sticky tray is a common problem with the original machine, luckily I've always been able to get away with just giving either the top of the unit or the front of the tray a light tap and it's opened, never had or known anyone who's had one where the drive just completely locked in place though.

Hypothetically you could use just about any DVD-ROM, but you'd have to find out where to tap the appropriate signals from which isn't something I've been able to do on my own. Granted I don't own an oscilloscope or a logic analyzer either.

I think you missed the part in my link where you reflash the drive with the official samsung drives firmware.

If all else fails and you decide you don't NEED the DVD-drive, it's always possible to hotwire the yellow cables and easily replace the drive with a second HDD.

The only thing you'd need to add is a DPDT toggle switch for the power supply to HDD. Also cut up a Molex splitter for connecting both drives.

I got some schematics and pics on that which I still need to upload for a small guide though...

yeah, i just give mine a tap aswell, although now running 2 dvd drives now so only use drive for originals, swapping ides is a pain though

Managed to get it fixed, sort of. I swapped the drive with my other Xbox which had a drive that at least attempted to open. Keeping a disc in sorted it. Its playing games fine now. I'd like to get some emulators on it, perhaps turn it into a bit of a media centre. Its got 'UnleashX' and XBMC entries in the saved games list - how would I go about getting them started?

If anyone has a beginner's walkthrough on such things, let me know. I tried google, but like with PSP modding there is so much outdated/incorrect etc information its difficult to know where to begin.

The easiest way (in my view) is to use a program called "FlashFXP" to FTP the xbox. If it already has UnleashX and/or XBMC it's easy, just get the IP addy, type it in, and FTP it.

Snesorama message board has iso's of emulator compilations. Look for something called the "Big Ass Emulator Disk". Each disk (there's 4) houses a different speciality, one for consoles, one for handhelds, etc. Here's a video showing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH4IgWQDrYU

But basically, Step 1. FTP xbox using FlashFXP, Step 2. Download emulator disk isos (or emulators separately, there's a BUNCH of them out there), Step 3. ????? (South Park Joke), Step 4. Go into your system, and see if it works.

If you don't have UnleashX, or XBMC, it's a little harder. Those two Dashboards are the easiest to use (in my opinion). You can probably FTP your chip if you need to, to get them on. I had to once, when a bad install corrupted the XBMC dashboard, which lead to an aggravating night. Anyways, good luck.
