Lain's one of the freakiest series I've ever seen. And that's the good kind of freaky! Though I don't think a lot of people have heard of it, especially over here (probably due to Pioneer being douche bags and not selling any videos here or in the UK any more). Thank god for Amazon and the Region-X disc (for playing any region DVD video) for the PS2!

I haven't seen much anime outside of the kid's crap I get on TV here (my stupid cheap-ass cable doesn't include Cartoon Network or Sci-fi), my friend's 15-year collection of old Manga Video crap (Devilman, Gall Force, Akira Lensman, Project A-ko, etc. - please kill me now! OK, not all of it was crap), and some fansubs I've got off teh interweb (Love Hina*). OK, I've seen a lot of anime - just not much GOOD anime!

*I used to like Love Hina. I read most of the Manga (12 books?), then started getting some (truly awful Japanese->Korean->English) fansubs, but then it started to just annoy me and I realised how retardedly repetitive it got. There's only so many times I can laugh at Keitaro accidentally falling into Naru's tits! I think this - and Mahoromatic - have put me off ecchi forever...

Anyway, other stuff what I like:

    - Evangelion (after watching it 4 times over it kinda makes sense. No wait... it doesn't)
    - Big-O
    - Stupid shit like Dragon Half
    - Lupin III - ok, I've only seen Castle of Cagliostro but I *really* want to see the TV series as well! On a related note, Hayao Miyazaki's teh pwn :-D
    - Cowboy Bebop
    - FLCL - though I don't think it was the best thing EVAR like some seem to believe. It was awfully confusing/nonsensical at times...
    - Err... can't remember anything else now. My brain's broken.

Kid's crap I watched too much on TV:
    - Pokemon (trust me it was good at the beginning, but after ep. 18 it started going downhill - after about ep. 200 it just became FUCKING UNBEARABLE. The Japanese soundtrack's bitchin' though)
    - Moomin (the early '90s TX anime series - best thing that ever came out of Finland and Japan together!)
    - Digimon (I used to watch this religiously. I also used to have no life. Kind of nice how the different series were actually different - especially the 4th one)
    - Megaman Windows NT Workstation or whatever it's called. It was watchable. Kinda.
    - OK, they're not really anime, but the animation that Ashi Pro (I think) did for the crappy '80s Dic cartoons was wicked-bad - stuff like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, MASK and The Real Ghostbusters, but especially The Real Ghostbusters!!
    Turn after the SECOND CAKE!

For all intents and purposes, I hate anime...but I occasionally see it as I flip through the channels.

And the only thing that's every interested me is Lupin III. I like cartoons where everybody isn't a giant robot or a ninja or a giant robot ninja. Lupin fits the bill, and is pretty damn entertaining...i've yet to see anything else I like.

I like stupid American cartoons...Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen, South Park, King of the hill...Simpsons, Family guy...Futurama...the list goes on.

If it makes you feel better, Disney going to be localizing and releasing it here sometime in the near future like they did with Sen To Chihiro.

I'm sortof divided. On one hand, it's Disney. On they other, they did the American release for Spirited Away and are doing new DVD versions of Totoro, Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, and something else I can't remember...

Giant Robo - Best anime ever. Blows my mind as to how few have seen this. Go and watch it now you will not regret it.

Berserk - Awesome story and the toughest character ever(Guts)

Naruto - Funny, great characters and some of the best battles in anime(Rock Lee Vs Gaara would push for top 5 at least).

It won't. :) I'll buy the JPN DVD before it comes out here. I just couldn't fathom watching a Ghibli movie dubbed.

looks like a few us here share the same thoughts -- old school is better. I did forget to mention Akira. I always took shit for saying this is pretty much the best anime out there. Think about it -- one of the first mainstream movies that had the balls to have a really GOOD... no EXCELLENT soundtrack. I even went and saw the team that made it perform in Shinjuku.

Giant Robo - Best anime ever. Blows my mind as to how few have seen this. Go and watch it now you will not regret it.
Agreed. I remember waiting some 9 months for each of them to come out. What a great show.... just reeks of quality on all fronts. Story, animation quality, and most of all --- style.

I dunno, I think you should give it a shot sometime. Most US dubbed anime has horrific voice acting in my opinion, but I didn't think the American releases were bad at all. Mononoke had some pretty high quality acting talent too - Billy Crudup, Gillian Anderson, Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thornton. And there's nothing funnier than having Phil Hartman behind the voice of Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service. :smt043

I can recognise "The Dub Voices" in most dubbed Japanese/Anime movies and shows that come on around here in the USA.

I'm a stickler for "original" though. I'd rather watch/play anything in it's original language. It's just the way I am. I guess it depends on the topic but there's a lot of subleties that aren't easily transrated.

Hehe, I know the biggest Lain fan ever, not my cup o tea. After watching the series a handful of times I felt no more enlightened. For a slight while in 2000, it had almost an American cult following you're truely a anime newbie if you haven't heard of Lain o_0

Berzerk was pretty cool, I like how it shames Evas unexpected ending hehe

I want to watch Naruto but I'm afraid, I'm afraid it'll be another Rekka no Honou. Modern Jump comics are loosing quality, I've got some 1960's manga that pwns in ninja content :D

When was Anime/Manga started? I know of Astro boy from the 50s, but what was the exact first anime/manga show?
I was reading in History one day, and saw some signs made by some Japanese people or something, with pictures on them, and No "big eyes". When was the "Big eyes" trend started?

I think the big eyes thing was started in the 60's, (with Tetsuwan Atom which my Japanese teacher always recognized as the first anime.) Also she always said that says Japanese draw big eyes because Japanese like big eyes and many wish they had bigger eyes ;) I know that weekly manga dates way back to pre WWII Japan in the form as seen today, but of course characatures through ukiyo-e are like hundreds of years old.

I couldn't agree more ! There are only two anime that I prefear in English and they are Dominion (1 to 4) and Cyber City. Cyber City has much better music than the japanese one plus the voice acting is top. just as you'd expect. Dominion has great voice acting too but the japanese music is far better than that cheap techno shit on the dubbed version. how does the japanese song go now ? Oh yeah - Hot dance on cherry moon, ooh ooh yeah...... :smt043

About the big eyes thing, I read years ago that Osamu Tezuka was influenced by the work of Walt Disney, I am not sure if that is true but it sounds very plausible.

In Australia they released the first 6 episodes and just didn't bother releasing the last one. Took me a year or so to finally get it on import(can't quite remember but did Manga take forever on getting the last ep translated). Aus used to suck for Anime. A few bits here and there from Manga and only one import store(overpriced) and I didnt even know about fansubbers then.
I wish Imagawa could continue GR. The set up for the next story in the last ep still has me drooling. Hopefully......one day :smt022

Have you seen the new Tetsujin yet? Imagawa's doing that and looking at a few episode synops it has mention of a Dr Big Fire(Kenji's in it as well and maybe Chujo?).
Haven't been able to find and fansubs of it yet but I think it's out in the US soon.

Since nobody mentioned these yet (I think):

    Area 88
    Here is Greenwood
    Escaflowne
    Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Big seconds on Maison Ikkoku and Lupin III. I own all of the graphic novels that have come out in English for each of them (that's 17 volumes thus far for Lupin).
