Sega Naomi Cigarette burn marks

Hi guys, I have been doing up a Naomi Universal standup cabinet this summer. Its all going fine except the monitor surround has some cigarette burn marks on the lower section where it joins the control panel on the left and right.
The previous owner had painted over them as a quick fix but the colour didn't match well so I removed the paint with white spirits.
Any cleaning tips for burns in plastic?



As you can see its not too bad, but I'd like to sort it.

btw. I installed that VMU port for the Dreamcast pad hack.

You don't want any scratches from abrasive cleaning products, trust me.

Hi,
I've sucessfully removed cig marks on one of my naomis using this method (it only works if they're not too deep and yours don't seem to be):

- WETsand with 1200 or finer grit sandpaper if you can get it (or if it's not enough to take the marks out you can start with 600 or 800 and then 1000/1200 and so on) but you want the lightest scratches possible and don't skip sandpaper grades! Don't do it in just the spots where the marks are. Do it on the whole area where the marks are to try to blend them (trust me if you sand it in the spots only you'll get small holes and then you have to fill them with some plastic filler and sand it again and paint the whole piece!)
- When you get it really smooth use novus 3 and then 2 plastic polish products. You can do it by hand or with a little polisher (which is a lot faster and works great).

It should look like new without repainting the whole bezel.

Never seen a Naomi VMU adapter before (although I knew they existed). That's super cool and I now want one as well!

That's just a dreamcast pad hack ;-). He just cut a hole on the monitor surround.

Yeah pretty good work actually :-). I know the f355 cabs had vmu ports but never seen it on naomis. Capcom released a panel that had two dc pad ports and you could plug your dc pads with vmus and it would work.

Looked into VMU bit as well, and it seems like the two small rectangle pieces on either side of the Naomi emblem on the monitor surround were to house VMU connectors. They're about the same size and it makes sense there being two of them instead of just one.

I remember when the Dreamcast launched they were talks of bringing characters, game saves etc from home down to the arcade. I guess that never really panned out

That kinda makes sense but I guess they didn't invest that much time into it. At least I've never seen it!

Before the launch of the Dreamcast I remember some flyers saying exactly that. Something about bringing your saves and stats to the arcades and I thought it was awesome back then! I might still have that flyer somewhere lol ....

Glad people are liking the VMU holder. The official ones plug in horizontally into the bezel (in the 2 gaps in the frame) but I wanted to be able to see the little screen when its on.


I have some wet and dry paper in the garage. I'll check the grade and have a go later.

You're welcome buddy. Don't forget to try first with the finer grade sandpapers (I managed to remove mine with 800grit but maybe you can do it with a 1200grit). Less scratches is what you want. Also the Novus products are pretty amazing don't know if you ever used them.

no but I have used T-Cut on plastic in the past, mostly on cars.

T-cut is absolutely amazing for painted metal or even painted plastics. For bare plastics Novus does a much better job at least in my opinion.

Yep those are the products. Novus 3 is for heavy scratches (after sanding for example), Novus 2 is for medium/light scratches and Novus 1 is more of a plastic cleaner than anything else. I only used it once. I never tried them on cps2 cases but it should work.

AFAIK Gauntlet Legends is the only arcade machine to officially support VMUs in terms of being able to use your Dreamcast saves from Gauntlet Legends on the original arcade machine. Probably others that I"m not aware of.

I don't know if it exists in the UK but all it is is a 1.1% solution of bleach and a few thickening agents with a few other substances I've yet to take the time to identify. It works wonders on the walls of my parents house whose walls have become stained in places over time. Doesn't seem to work on plastics I've tried it on nearly as well but its worth a shot. ABSOLUTELY DO test it on the inside of the machine first in case it makes it fugly.

I'd also suggest trying RetroBrite. Its not a product but if you hit up google you'll find recipes to try.

Surely having fag burns on a Japanese cabinet is all part of the authentic experience? All you need is the strong smell of smoke, a lack of natural light, some neons / led lighting and a looped tape of button tapping and you would feel like you were there.

I know exactly what you mean there Jamtex. I have 3 machines in a row in the garage and the few times I've had them all on and friends playing it was quite authentic and sounded great.
My Electrocoin Neo-Geo has a little ash tray on the front and no burns at all, I use it to hold the cabinet keys though.

I've heard of Retrobrite. I would like to bring the whiteness up a bit on the bezel. the control panel is a fantastic bone white and there's a bit of a contrast to the bezel right now.

I wouldn't recommend using retrobright in your case. I've heard that for big parts retrobright can make them warp (though I personally never tried it). The difference in colour is absolutely normal as the CP and bezel are made out of different materials. I bought one new naomi cab a few years ago and even then there was a slight difference in colour. In your case it doesn't look bad at all. But anyway if you try it please let me know the result!
