I guess every country has racists. Just that the ones in Japan are always the arses in power :smt009 As for my in-laws, they love me. My father-in-law likes me more than my wife's sister's husband who is Japanese oh and a total git :smt043

If you can speak japanese, you're usually in. It's much harder to de-humanize someone that speaks your own langauge. Unless they're a total cheeseball.

I'm the only son-in-law (there was another one w/ my sister-in-law, but that didn't last) so they're pretty stoked.

Yes I can speak Japanese, far from being bilingual though. That has nothing to do with my in-laws liking me though. My wife's father was a sailor who once wanted to marry a Spanish woman but his father wouldn't allow it. My wife's farther likes all people, regardless of where they're from. Before my wife I had another Japanese girl friend who's mother wasn't too keen on me but didn't hate me. Her father was the 2nd Kendo champion of Japan in his younger years. He now runs a Kendo shop. He was a cool guy but unbelievably strict. Not sure why he liked me since my Japanese at that time (5 years ago) was terrible.

There's an age gap between my wife and I (me being the younger). That was a huge concern for my mother-in-law. I'm sure you know how the age vs. pay situation in this country works.

My wife is older than me (by more than 1 year). Her mothers first assumption was that I didn't have enough money for marriage. Most Japanese people my age (at the time) made about $25k/year --- barely enough for one person to live in Tokyo, let alone two.
