    Dear Microsoft

GP, you need to start that post off with
    "Dear Microsoft,"

P.S.: My best friend and I once intended to make something like a webcomic named "Letters to the Editor" in which we featured crazy letters similar to that. We had a good number of them written up too but never made a site out of them. =(

In all fairness they've made it slightly better over the years. If you've had a PC since 1992 like me, you'll remember how Windows 3.0 was only useful for Solitare, Paintbrush, Word and naff-all else...

Oh, and a fancy clock. And somehow, despite its lack of things in general, it still crashed! I especially liked it when the screen went all scrambled and crazy when I played 16-bit audio...

While I agree that Windows has some damn good functionality, they've also retrogressed in a lot of areas... namely security and stability. Why Windows doesn't come with a GOOD firewall and virus scanner is beyond comprehension, and dispicable.

Arg... More Windows hating nonesense. If you don't like it, don't use it. See how you get on then...

You do know I'm typing this on my Linux machine, don't you?

I paid for Windows... OEMS actually DO cost you money. Besides, w/ all the fuck-ups it's caused, and hours of painstaking rebuilding, M$ owes my ass money. They're the only software that I'll actually take a Warez version of. I paid for my Flash & Photoshop.

re hokuto no ken typing game problems

I have tried running the jp Hokuto No Ken typing game but I always get an error message referencing 'director' I think I haven't checked for a while.

I looked around the web and found it was common with people trying to run certain stuff. I thought it may be related to Flash or something else, found a link for director player 6 but I don't think I need that.

Thought this was the best place to ask for sure, can someone help me please?

Windows has experienced a fatal error in "suckscock.sys".
    Windows will now shut down.

I never paid for a copy of WindowsXP but have three individual machines with legal keys running.
There are plenty of ways to get Windows with little to no cost... anyone work in a retail store that sells anything computer related?
Sign-up at Microsoft.com as a retail partner and take some quizes that give you points to apply toward free software.
While you're at it sign-up with both AMD and Intel as a retail partner and once a year they'll give you the chance to buy the latest CPU and Mobo for $200! They always throw in a copy of WinXP Pro with those as well! =)

I'm having a problem with this computer (it's the same "Windows XP was installed on a really shitty computer" computer). I've managed to boot up with a hard drive I brought from home by setting the original hard drive to slave. Now I've noticed that neither the CD-RW drive nor the DVD drive work.

They're not detected in the bios. If I could just get one to work, I'd be good to go (I just need to reinstall Windows). Any suggestions?

All probably sound obvious, but its the sort of thing i miss:
    Both Connected, Powered
Jumper's set correctly (avoid Cable Select)
Try CD drive and no hard disk
    Try in different channel

Hope it helps, and i dont intend any offence with the simplicity of my points - As i said its the sort of thing i forget about

No offense taken. We all make stupid mistakes sometimes.

The jumpers are set correctly, both have power, and I'm pretty sure they're in the correct channel (although my supervisor may have tried to "fix" them, just like the other day). I'll give them a go tommorrow, as it's getting late, and I'm leaving in about ten minutes. Thanks for the advice :-).

I don't hate windows, but at the same time I don't adore it. I just live with it becuase it works and it's easy to use. The problems that come with Windows are usually simple to overcome, and I myself have not had a serious problem with Windows once in all the years I have used it.

The only problems you'll ever have with Windows is if you try to mess with it. Which is why my Dad's computer works fine and mine doesn't. :smt042 Except for ME. Which was an xtreme piece of shit that M$ has disowned and declared a bastard child. :smt043

How old is this PC? I know with old 486s the BIOSes wouldn't recognise IDE CD-ROM drives but would still work fine in Windows.

My 486 is from 92, the BIOS can see the cd rom drive... then again... I did flash it :P Its running the latest Pheonix BIOS the board could handle.

    Taemos...

Is the cable UDMA66 or UDMA100? 66 is the old fashioned cable, with bigger wires. That will work just fine.

Does the cable have those knobs on the top? If not, are all connectors the right way round?

Does just one drive on its own detect?

Is the BIOS set up correctly? i.e. not set to disabled on e.g. Secondary Master and Slave. Is it set to auto, or manually set? (some older BIOSses were fussy).

There's a couple of suggestions to check!
