Zanac is another good one for the FDS. I had never played it before but it came on side B of my Super Mario Bros 2 turns out it was released on cartridge in the USA. I'm interested in import friendly games too.

    Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3)

Incidentally, you must get an English translate of this game, because it's the only way your playing Castlevania III on the Power Pak!

Huh? You don't have to be able to read to play CV3. It's a great game even in Japanese. At most you are asked Yes or No type questions if you want an ally to join you. Other than that you miss out on the story dialogue but CV1 had none and was still great. CV2 had terrible dialog and it was best ignored. ;)

You can play it, yes, but wouldn't you like to be able to read all the wording on the intro/cut scenes? :-) The other stinker of course is that the FDS Castlevania III cart had a special sound chip, which sounds great on a Famicom, but obviously won't work on the NES. The default music on the Japanese rom stinks. It doesn't default to the same music as the NES version. I have CIII on cart though, so I would just play that.

It does too work on NES. You just need the right adapter.

What? The PowerPAK can indeed run the japanese CV3 with the extra audio. Loopy released a mapper pack that does this ages ago. All you need to do is connect a resistor between two expansion port pins.

Oh! Well, I'm terrible with that stuff, wind up melting the board.

I "hacked" sound input on a NES for using my VRCVI multicart and after tinkering with the resistor values I got much better results than what I saw people complain about in the internet (VRC sound louder than internal console sound).

But somehow it still seems to work better in my (discrete chips) famiclone "Family Game" from NTDEC....

Yes non NOAC famiclones do exist and they're damn good compatibility wise ...

Do they not have the sound duty cycle problem? Really then do they have any problems?

Back in the 90s this company http://www.umc.com/English/ used to make a lot of cloned chips and the RP2A03(UM6527 was NTSC, UM6547 was same but pairs with the PAL60 chip for Brazil)/RP2C02 (UM6528 for NTSC and UM6548 for PAL60) duo and these are the ones that actually have the duty cycle different.

I sometimes wonder if it was intentionally made to make the chips different...

Some famiclone CPUs like the Korean TA-03 chips work exactly like the Ricoh chips but get a bit too hot for my liking lol.

And there's some issue with board design that might cause DPCM to fail or behave erratically... (Like on TMNT Manhattan project title screen the "Cowabunga" does not sound right)

So regarding the duty cycle issue on the sound generator if you notice it's wrong you can safely assume it's an UMC chip ... :P
