Because by revealing an item before the publisher announces it, it adversely affects the shares and stock prices in the company (which sometimes can have a knock on effect to the dev if said stock raises were going towards funding of new projects at specific time), plus ruins the carefully-crafted hype and buzz that surrounds an upcoming game. Essentially, a leak like this doesn't sound like much, but it really can dick about with a company's strategy.

Why is secrecy over just seeing a game or whatever suuuuuch a big deal? What, is the entire project put at jeopardy because someone saw it? What real harm are game designers trying to avoid by not allowing images or video or whatever of their games to get out? Yeah, source code is bad, beta builds are bad, but screenshots? I don't see any harm that could actually come from that? So people know about it, SO WHAT? It's not like it's the government where someone seeing pictures of something or knowing about something they shouldn't spells doom for a country or community. Again, I'm not trying to cause trouble, this is an honest question.
afaik the game was completely unannounced

Sometimes i think that after the leak of biohazard 1995 betas, he went a bit crazy, he always said that he was an active beta tester and obviously liked RE, but if he shared the betas, he couldn´t be a beta tester again.

Even if wasn´t him that leaked, it possibly ended his hobby, noticed that after this he decided to share alot of betas, to the point to create an forum for beta games with current gen games pics like alan wake.

I´m just saying that he went crazy after that leak, not defending him.

Where do you guys get the idea that it was on PartnerNet (edit: CertNet in your case... which is an internal network) from?

WTVR I can't say anything due to the legal notices.

I can tell you MS is taking this very seriously.

I would NOT want to be Robert_Kendo atm, esp since his site
    registrar lists his personal info
    in RL

im not a lawyer but you might take comfort in this

according to safe harbor law there is nothing that can be done to you or the site
because you took appropriate actions like removing the offending content and banning him

Not sure about CertNet, but I can say with certainty that it was on PNet.

Is there anything left of the thread/post that started this because I am having trouble understanding the context of exactly what happened?
Well, it's rather brutal here. Right now we are advising all our clients to put everything they've got into canned food and shotguns.

Robert_Kendo posted screens of Alan Wake's Night Springs, an unannounced Alan Wake game for XBLA, leaked from PNet. Shit came down on Assembler, Kendo was banned, tons of people got banned from PNet.

given the rampant Partnernet leaks in the past and the well known fact that there are many kits on PN that shouldn't be, I probably wouldn't have put my high profile, unannounced XBLA game up on PN to begin with.

So stocks are going to fluctuate because people know what something is? I hardly see how knowing about a project is going to have any effect. Yeah, I don't see how it messes with the strategy either. So you're gonna announce it at E3. Pictures leak out. Still announce it at E3, what's the big deal? I'm so sorry that this is turning out like it is, I just...it doesn't make any sense to me why it's a bad thing. Yeah, he wasn't supposed to, I got that, but all this talk about harm it causes the company, I'm just not seeing it...

Positive/negative or early announcements can have an immediate effect on a company's share price as investors - or would be investors - make assumptions based on said announcements/leaks. It happens for nearly every company that seeks/has investors/investment. And the timing of specific positive announcements are usually very important in creating buzz and thus positivity towards the developer/publisher. Making them more desirable to further investment.
