Let's get some things straight (Dev HW misinformation)

I'll start by saying that the blue "Debugging Station" Playstations have 2Mb (Mebibytes or "megabytes") of work RAM! The standard amount! Today I compared every RAM part between the SCPH-1001, DTL-H1001 and DTL-H1101 and found:

IC106-9 are the same on all boards (likely WRAM)

IC201 and 2 on the DTL are 256K x 16. The corresponding DRAM on the SCPH is in a single 128K x 32 chip (likely VRAM)

The other RAM, IC310 on both boards is 256K x 16.

Unless any PSX techies know otherwise (that the "other 2Mb" is embedded in the CPU) know this as the truth!

Good, thanks for clearing this up. I think the 4 chips are the system's DRAM (60ns), 256kx16 must be the sound RAM... but VRAM is 1024k so there's something missing...

Maybe the VRAM I mentioned wasn't actually VRAM but a CDROM buffer or something, I just suggested VRAM because a website where I found the chip had it listed as a good VRAM canidate. Maybe VRAM is embedded? I don't believe any of the other Sony ICs are RAM.

Me too. I'll post pics of the following models:

    DTLH 1001 Blue
    SCPH 7001
    SCPH 5501
    SCPH 101

Compare for what? The only units I don't have is the DTL-H120X and green Debugger, the rest of course have 2Mb. Everything else should go in another forum. This is a forum for proof of misinformation.

Compare to set it right once and for all. That "double the ram" had to have started somewhere.

Maybe only the green does, I'll go look later on tonight.

Maybe the green one doesn't, I just saw a website that says the blue have 8mb of RAM...

A picture of the bare PCB's front would be good if you can make out all the chip names from the picture, more of a high res scan would be really helpful. The RAM chips are what we're looking for, and they're IC301, IC103-9, IC201/IC202 on the blue units.

    that might be a problem.
to capture whole board will result huge size - and the one I have at the moment max at 3MP and missus took 5MP one...

let me see what I can do... I do have 12MP one but it will be a while to recharge its battery stick... if assembler hasn't done by tonight I will get off my lazy ass and do something about... :-D

BTW, I did get around to writing that PSX diagnosis program if anybody still needs it... right now it spits out info thru the PAR-PC link but I can hack in some font routine. Basically it checks the kernel memory area for RAM size (the BIOS kindly puts a meaningful value there) and also inquires for the GPU revision.

    PSOne 101 board:

    PSX 7001 Retail

    Debug PSX 1001, blue:
    Top of the board:

back of the board with a wierd chip, a Motorola 68K CPU. what's its purpose?

Thanks for the pictures but they're not necessary and have no relevance to disproving rumors. Even if they were relevant, no matter how big and nice they are, the part numbers aren't legible.

ALL PS units have 2Mb of work RAM including the blue "debugging" units. The development ISA boards have 8Mb. Yarozes have an amount unknown by me as do green debuggers. Green debuggers likely have 2Mb as well.

If you have another rumor you'd like to clear up, please post your findings, otherwise please lets stay on topic.

    would 4064 x 2704 pixels @ 11.4MB or 4.1MB compressed do?
i will take out and fire up my Canon EOS 1Ds tonight, or tomorrow if I need to recharge its battery brick and open my green debug...

    let's see how it goes...

    cheers

No pictures will do unless you can read the part numbers. Maybe you two can start a PCB pictures thread? ;) If you can't make out the numbers in the picture, since it would be helpful for this thread to have a green debugger pcb pic, maybe I could highlight the chips that chip names would be helpful for. Chances are they're the same as the IC numbers I mentioned in my first post.

ok I will take section of M/B where P/N should be readable...
I will take out tripod and other gears tonight after my daughter goes to bed.

still won't know how it will turn out and I don't think there's picture server big enough to u/l couple of pictures at 4.1MB each...

yakity yak yak. I posted them to support your data further and the fact that people love pictures of things other people own.

But no one can see the part numbers, and theres no denying that retail units have 2Mb WRAM, and I don't love seeing threads being bombarded with gynormous pictures of people's collections.
