Any idea of the format? Looks to me like a Saturn game from the textures.

No idea. Saturn came straight to mind as well, but the picture was taken from reddit.com in a thread where people were posting pictures of games they missed. i tried to contact the guy but i never got a reply.

i think it may even be arcade.

It's a PC game by Gremlin Graphics Software, a UK based software developer. It was released around 1997 and called Fatal racing. How do I know this? Well, the yellow "Actua Sports" banners that you can just about make out in the background gave it away  I do actually remember the game as well. Blew away any Saturn or PlayStation racer at the time. True arcade style for the PC.

I remember playing this back in 96-7 on the PC. It was pretty good!
You can ask for any old woman
You can ask for an army of ants
You can ask for a pillar of poison
You can ask for sheep and shavers

    And you can die for

Fatal Racing was a pack-in for a lot of 3D accelerator cards, complete with Actua Soccer. They both came with my Diamond Monster 3D.
The game is actually quite tricky, because it retains some kind of driving physics, while throwing stuff like loopings and corkscrews at you.

I believe it was a sort of sequel to the excellent stunt car racer I spent many hours playing on the amiga.

Maybe a spiritual sequel, but nothing more. I remember this game being kinda average, but it was still sort of fun when bored. The thing I liked most was the championship season mode that most arcade racers didn't have....unfortunately most of the tracks, except for the one with the badass corkscrew jump, weren't as interesting as they could've been.
Tried to play this recently, but it just gave me major motion sickness. While we're talking about old arcade-style PC racers, I wish Screamer would go on sale at GOG.com: even $5.99 seems a little too much for that game.

"Blew away"? I can think of several Saturn and PSX games that were graphically as good or better, aside from the higher resolution. As for gameplay, I don't know because I haven't played it... but again, there are some good racers on the Saturn and PSX.

I'd definitely take Daytona USA, Sega Rally or Ridge Racer over Fatal Racing any day.

It was known as Whiplash in the US where it was released on january 1996, 3 months after the european release.
About the same release time as Destruction Derby and Screamer, I found it not as fun as those two.
1996 also saw the release of the sequels of both DD and Screamer, wich I rate as the 2 best arcade racers of the time, and Destruction Derby 2 in multiplayer is just awesome, something PS1 players never have experienced.

I downloaded this from UseNet earlier and it's a whopping 10.4 MB in size! Straight in the bin though 'cos it's a bloody DOS game and I can't be arsed fannying around trying to get it to work.

Reminds me of Screamer...christ I loved that game, pushed my Compaq Pentium 133 to the limits.

That show was really cool, and it lasted until the 2000s. There was a dubbed version over here, and it wasn't that out of date even dubbed.

    What was it called?
